Hormones are directly responsible for the health of the human vagina. The levels of the female hormones oestrogen and progesterone change all throughout a woman’s life. When she reaches perimenopause and after her menopause, these two hormones can no longer promote the vagina’s health. As a result, the mucus wall of the vagina called the vaginal mucosa thins and loses its elasticity. This, in turn, leads to dryness of the vagina and loss of its tone. What is even more worrying is a disruption of the hormone cycle causes a loss of libido and sexual arousal, reduces the sensitivity of both the vagina and the clitoris. This is another reason why the vagina remains stubbornly dry.

Yet another complication that stems from an altered hormone cycle is urinary incontinence (UI). There are four kinds of UI-

• Stress Incontinence: a small amount of urine seeps through the bladder during coughing, sneezing or laughter.

• Urge Incontinence: urine leaks out when the person is resting or sleeping.

• Mixed Incontinence: this syndrome combines both stress and urges incontinence.

• Overflow Incontinence: the person is unable to hold in urine when the bladder is full.

In such cases, doctors prescribe a procedure that rejuvenates the vagina that will revoke urinary incontinence and solve the problem of dryness of the vagina. This procedure is PRP treatment.

What is PRP?

PRP procedure means injecting Platelet Rich Plasma into the walls of the vagina or into the clitoris. This plasma is extracted from the person’s own blood and once injected, it triggers multiplication of cells. PRP releases certain growth promoters that trigger the production of collagen and elastic in that thicken the mucous membrane. As a result, during sexual arousal, the vaginal wall becomes receptive to stimulation and starts secreting mucous that takes care of the dryness complaint. It also enhances clitoral sensitivity allowing heightened sexual pleasure and drive. Once the problem of vaginal dryness has been addressed, the woman can once again experience orgasms.

For the treatment of Urinary Incontinence, the Platelet Rich Plasma is injected into the urethra. There it triggers the generation of stem cells which aids in the repair of tissues and if necessary new tissues are produced around the urethra and the bladder that help in greater bladder control. This does not allow small amounts of urine to leak through. Vaginal dryness and urinary incontinence can deliver a severe blow to a woman’s sexual drive as well as her confidence. But, PRP treatment can restore her vagina to its original health and help her return to her normal lifestyle.
