Your heart is the centre of your cardiovascular system and is responsible for just about everything that gives life to your body – from supplying oxygen to the body to keeping your immune system healthy. However, the kinds of food you eat and the amount of physical activity you participate in can affect the overall well-being of your heart – and the tissues that make up your cardiovascular system – dramatically.

However, taking a few prudent measures can improve your heart health and lower your chances of developing heart diseases. According to WHO, an estimated 80% of premature cardiac attacks can be prevented with dietary and lifestyle changes.

This World Heart Day, we present to you five best tips to protect your heart from grave illnesses.

  • Eat Healthily

Oily, processed foods sure may taste good but they spike up your cholesterol and blood sugar levels, which are major risk factors for cardiovascular diseases. You should change your diet plan and embrace a healthier one to avoid such risks. Eat lots of vegetables and fresh fruits and include lean meat, lentils and fatty fish, a variety of whole grains, and foods that are low in saturated fats – they are loaded with essential nutrients that are good for the health.

  • Keep Your Weight Under Check

Obesity or excess body weight is yet another risk factor for heart diseases. Therefore, it is advisable that you maintain a healthy weight to keep obesity-induced heart disorders at bay. Moderate exercise and a well-balanced diet can help you keep weight in check.

  • Get Moving

Studies have shown that one of the causes of cardiovascular disorders is a sedentary lifestyle. The majority of people nowadays have desk jobs that require them to sit in a place for prolonged hours. Not only does it contribute to weight gain but also leads to several related health issues. Aim to spend at least 30 minutes daily exercising or taking part in some sort of physical activity. Exercising regularly can help relieve stress, keep you fitter and prevent the chances of stroke or a heart attack.

  • Get Rid of Ill Habits

Smoking causes plaque to build up in the arteries and increases your likelihood of developing coronary artery disease. Therefore, if you are in the habit of smoking, it is time to get rid of it right away.

In addition to following these healthy tips, it is equally important that you continue with your medications and monitor your cholesterol, blood pressure and blood glucose levels at regular intervals. Also, keep an eye out for signs and symptoms of heart diseases. Consult a doctor if you suspect them to be that of a cardiovascular condition. The sooner you seek assistance, better are your chances of recovery.
