In a shocking news for all the Indian cricket fans, opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan has been ruled out of the World Cup 2019 for at least three weeks owing to a hairline fracture in the thumb.

He sustained the fracture en route to his match-winning 117-run knock against Australia. Despite having a fractured thumb, he continued playing and ensured his team posts a comprehensive total on the board.

When the entire country is saddened by the news, here we are with all the relevant information regarding the condition.

Hairline Fracture: What causes it?

A hairline fracture is one of the most common types of sports injuries. A hairline fracture on the thumb usually occurs when a portion of your wrist suffers a blow or direct stress from an external force. The thumb may be bent down or pulled back, triggering intense pain.

The most common causes of hairline fractures are –

  • Repetitive activity or overuse
  • Increase in the frequency or duration of the activity

Symptoms of Hairline Fracture:

Hairline fractures are characterized by the following symptoms –

  • Excruciating pain
  • Swelling
  • Inability to move the injured part
  • Bruising
  • Tenderness

Over time, the symptoms usually get worse, especially if you engage in strenuous activities and heavy weightlifting. You should speak with your doctor and discuss the treatment plan in case the pain worsens.

Treatment and Recovery:

Hairline fractures require immediate attention. The condition, once diagnosed, must be treated right away.

The doctor will likely recommend the following treatment methods –

  • RICE The RICE method is a simple, self-care technique that combines Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation. You can get some relief by resting and applying an ice pack on the injured area. You should also compress the area and keep it elevated for faster recovery.
  • Medications – Certain medications, such as painkillers and Non-steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) can help reduce swelling and pain.

The line of treatment depends on the severity and site of the injury. You might have to wear a splint for a couple of days. You will notice an improvement in the condition within a few weeks. However, under normal circumstances, complete recovery from a hairline fracture takes about 6-8 weeks.

Ways to Prevent Hairline Fractures:

A little caution and some preventive measures such as the following can help prevent hairline fractures –

  • Use superior-quality exercise equipment
  • Wear insoles for heels to support anatomical abnormalities
  • Make sure that changes made in the intensity, frequency, or duration of your activity are gradual and not abrupt
  • Get sufficient rest in between activities/exercises
  • Eat a balanced and healthy diet, which incorporates the right amount of vitamins and calcium
  • Do not ignore an existing injury, which might potentially lead to a hairline fracture. Consult a doctor/ physiotherapist immediately.

Hairline fractures are common in athletes as well as non-athletes. It is important that you identify the symptoms early and seek appropriate treatment. Besides, take adequate measures to avoid such injuries in the first place.
