What is Keratitis?

Keratitis is an inflammation of the cornea. Cornea is the clear, dome-shaped tissue on the front of your eye that covers the pupil and iris.

Symptoms of Keratitis-

  • Eye pain
  • Watery eyes
  • Excess tears or other discharge from your eye
  • Difficulty opening your eyelid Blurred vision
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Blurred or hazy vision
  • An itchy, burning or gritty feeling in your eye
  • Swelling around the eye
  • A feeling that something is in your eye

Causes of Keratitis-

  • Injury to an eye
  • Contaminated contact lenses
  • Viruses
  • Contaminated water

Risk factors of Keratitis-

  • Wearing contact lenses
  • Reduced immunity
  • Warm climate
  • Use of corticosteroid eye drops
  • Eye injury 

Complications of Keratitis-

  • Slit-lamp exam
  • Laboratory analysis

Precautions & Prevention of Keratitis-

  • If you have a cold sore or a herpes blister, avoid touching your eyes
  • Don’t use corticosteroid eye drops
  • Replace your contact lens case every three to six months
  • Wash, rinse and dry your hands thoroughly before handling your contact lenses
  • Discard solution in the contact lens case each time you disinfect your lenses
