Hypertension - Can Drinking Mineral-Rich Water Help?

If you have high blood pressure or hypertension, there is a good possibility that your doctor has asked you to reduce your common salt intake. You are probably taking medicines that keep your blood pressure stabilized. While these two measures do indeed help, there is yet another tip you can try out to keep at bay the health hazards associated with hypertension.

Drink plenty of water

Water has plenty of benefits for your health. One surprising and less known benefit that will induce you to drink more water is that it can help fight off hypertension.

There are two ways that water can help you –

When your body is deprived of water, it stocks up on sodium or salt. Salt is instrumental in water retention. It is part of your body’s defence mechanism, which ensures that dehydration does not set in. But the flipside here is too much of salt will make your blood pressure soar. Moreover, if you are dehydrated, your body will start closing the capillary beds one by one. This puts excess pressure on your arteries, which means your blood pressure will begin to rise.

That is why you need to drink water to prevent the possibility of dehydration and in effect control your blood pressure.

A few Guidelines on drinking water for People with Hypertension

• To enjoy the benefits of water and stabilize your blood pressure drink around 2 litres of water every day

• Do not go overboard with drinking water. Your body can only absorb a particular quantity of water. Beyond that, the additional water will overwork your kidneys. The pressure exerted by water, as well as hypertension, will wear out your kidneys and make you susceptible to kidney disorders.

• If you are working out, make sure you drink water before, during and after exercise

What are the Health Benefits of Drinking Mineral Water?

Now that you know you have to drink water to lower hypertension, are you asking yourself if you should be drinking mineral water?

There are many ways mineral water can benefit you.

• It makes your bones, hair and teeth stronger

• Keeps your metabolism active

• Combats acidity

• Makes your sense organs keener

• Protects your heart

• Adds a glow to your skin

Can Mineral Water Help People with Hypertension?

Studies have found that mineral water or adding magnesium or calcium to drinking water can help lower high blood pressure. This, in turn, was observed to have reduced risks of cardiovascular diseases as well.

But then again, do not drink too much mineral water. Drinking mineral water in excess will be harmful because it contains minerals in abundance. Your kidneys will have to deal with all the excess minerals and in the long-term, it will affect the health of kidneys. Water is the easiest and least expensive way to keep your blood pressure in check. So, make it a point to drink the recommended amount every day.
