Heavy bleeding during periods is called menorrhagia in scientific terms. There are so many causes lying behind this entity. Every case has to be judged by many factors e.g. age of the patient, hormonal levels in blood, uterine pathology etc. Proper diagnosis can be made only by looking at all these factors carefully.

A young girl at the age of puberty may have menorrhagia because of hormonal imbalance, as hormones take about 2 years from menarche (age when periods start) to settle in their appropriate levels. In these cases symptomatic treatment is required. One should not take hormonal therapy at this age. Ayurvedic uterine tonics are the best solution in these cases along with iron supplements so as to check anemia at this level.

Second most common cause of menorrhagia is fibroid or cyst in reproductive age.It can be diagnosed by ultrasound (pelvis) or TVS. In these cases, the aim of management is to stop the bleeding and then to treat the fibroid or cyst. Ashokarishta has very gud effects in controlling excessive bleeding. Many styptic agents are developed by many ayurvedic pharmacies to control bleeding e.g. styplon, amystop g etc, which can be taken with proper guidelines. Then resolving fibroid and cyst is the another issue which can be successfully treated through ayurveda and protect the patient from surgery (refer my article on fibroid).

DUB is one another cause at elderly ages. This can be managed by ayurvedic uterine tonics like Ashokarishta, M2 tone and medicines like bolbadhha ras etc. D&C may be required in these cases at some levels so as to curette the pathologically ill tissue from the uterus.

The last most common cause at the age of menopause is hormonal imbalance. Hormones at the age of menopause i.e.47 to 50 get disturbed and shows the symptoms of hot flushes. But be alert to rule out any carcinomatous growth or fibroid at this age which might be the cause of menorrhagia, by investigating USG(pelvis) and CA 125.

By knowing all these about menorrhagia one must be aware of the line of treatment of heavy bleeding per vaginum during periods.
