Addiction is defined as an unhealthy attachment to a substance or an object, which makes it almost impossible for the individual to stay away from the same subject for even a few hours. Common addictions include those of drugs, alcohol and cigarettes. No matter the substance you are addicted to, it will have an adverse effect on your health.

Here is a look at some of the health complications that can arise if an addiction is left to grow in an uncontrolled way:

Complications of Addiction -

  1. Research indicates that long-term addiction may lead to HIV or AIDS. In some cases, neurological damage has also been noticed as a result of such addiction.
  2. Depression, stress and anxiety are the three most common conditions resulting from addiction. This is because you feel upset whenever you do not have the addictive substance at hand.
  3. Addiction can cause your social behaviour to change and may also result in fraught personal relationships.
  4. Lastly, due to the inordinate sums of money being spent to feed the addiction, people lose all of their savings and often end up bankrupt.

Treatment For Addiction -

Here are some true and tested forms of treatment that are used to manage and treat addiction.

  1. Medications are prescribed to deal with schizophrenia or depression that accompanies the rehabilitation procedure.
  2. Psychotherapy involves behavioural talks and therapies to help you ease out of any addiction.
  3. During this detox procedure, when the addictive substance is strictly kept away from the patient, he/she may start suffering from withdrawal symptoms. This is why medical services should be at hand to deal with any health complication.
  4. Appointing a case manager also helps you to stick to the path of recovery without giving in to your old addiction.
  5. Engaging in support groups with the same goal can be of great help. Such social engagements with people going through the same predicament can help.

If you are addicted to something, seek help from professionals. The sooner you seek treatment, the better it is for your health and life.
