Rhytidectomy, which is usually known as the Facelift surgery, is a cosmetic surgery to improve the visible signs of ageing on one’s face and create an overall younger appearance. The surgery reduces the signs of ageing such as sagging skin, skin folds on jawline and cheeks, wrinkles and other changes that come with age.

During the face-lift surgery, a flap or fold of skin on either side of the face is drawn back and tissues beneath the skin are reformed, which re-contours the face and results in a more youthful appearance. Excessive skin is removed before closing the skin flaps.

Platysmaplasty or neck-lift surgery is usually done together with Rhytidectomy to lessen the sagging skin and fat deposits on the neck. Fine creases, prominent wrinkles, damaged skin from sun exposure or skin irregularities cannot be erased or decreased using the Facelift surgery. With age, the shape and appearance of the face are altered. The skin gets loose and less elastic. Also, fat get unequally deposited into certain face areas.

Preparation for the Surgery

Cosmetic surgery is a complex procedure and hence requires a number of physical examinations before confirming the required surgery. Patients are required to tell their surgeon all about their medical history, physical conditions, allergies, earlier surgeries or plastic surgeries, complications, if any, from the earlier surgeries, any drug addiction, and other relevant medical and cosmetic details. These details help the surgeon to plan the surgery more carefully and predict the expected complications which may occur during or after the surgery.

One is also required to provide the surgeon with the name and doses of all the drugs he/she consumes including over the counter drugs, vitamins, and other dietary supplements, prescription drugs, herbal and Ayurveda medications, and any other.

One has to undergo a facial examination before the Facelift surgery. During the examination, the medical team takes images or pictures of the patient’s face from various angles and close-up shots of certain features. Bone structure, fat distribution, face shape, and skin quality are also examined by the surgeon to help decide the best surgery options available.

The surgeon and medical team, using available examinations and information of the patient, help the patient to understand the procedure, possible outcomes of the surgery, and the expected complications.

Takeaway

Rhytidectomy or Facelift surgery is a cosmetic surgery which helps reduce the skin sagginess, reforms the skin tissues, and makes the appearance more youthful. This surgery is usually performed along with neck-lift surgery. One has to go through a proper medical and physical examination of the face before the surgery. The surgeon openly tells the patient all the possible outcomes and complications of the surgery.
