About Secnidazole

Secnidazole is a drug of anti-infective or anti-parasitic nature. It is a very effective medicine for the treatment of dientamoebiasis. The medicine is not recommended to patients who are lactose intolerant, as the lactose is one of the main ingredients in the composition of the drug. If you are allergic to any other ingredients of the drug you must avoid taking it before due consultation with your doctor. The drug is not recommended to patients who have a history of severe liver or kidney diseases and blood porphyria.

There may be certain allergic reactions to the drug which include an adverse asthma attack, swelling of the tongue, throat or changes in voice, dizziness, hyperventilation, skin irritation such as rashes, hives or redness. The drug may be taken with or without food as the action of the medicine is not influenced by food intake. However it is recommended to abstain from smoking, alcohol, tobacco and caffeine during the course of the treatment. This drug is not administered to breastfeeding or pregnant women, especially those who are still in their first semester due to the potential health complications that may affect the foetus. The drug is known to affect the actions of anticoagulatants and increase the risk of bleeding.

It is then modified to an active form through the decrease of nitro groups to radical anions with the help of bacterial enzymes which interrupts bacterial DNA synthesis.
