Methimazole
Methimazole is prescribed as a medication to treat hyperthyroidism. It functions by inhibiting the production of the thyroid hormone by the thyroid glands. It is administered orally, and is available in the form of a tablet.
The initial dosage for adults is 15 mg per day. This can be increased up to 60 mg if required, to be taken as 20 mg doses, thrice in a day, at intervals of 8 hours. The initial dosage for children is 0.4 mg per kg, which is divided into three doses, each given at intervals of 8 hours. Methimazolemay cause dizziness, drowsiness or light-headedness. Do not drive a vehicle or operate machinery while taking this medication.
Medical practitioners must exercise caution while prescribing this drug to patients who have a history of reduced blood cell count, liver diseases, allergic reactions, or are pregnant or nursing women. This drug is contraindicated in patients who have developed an allergic reaction to it or to any of its components. While there have been cases wherein taking this medicine has posed a risk to the fetus, doctors may weigh the potential risks and the potential benefits and decide whether or not to prescribe this drug for pregnant women.
