Such problems recur in many people. Infections or allergies come back if you do not take steps to prevent it. Example, rubbing with soap, wearing tight/synthetic clothing/sun exposure/sweating etc can cause the recurrence of a skin infection. Start the same medication and take steps to prevent the infection.

Along with creams, supportive treatment is very important for ring worm. The ring worm spreads in the presence of moisture. Keep the area dry. Wipe the area dry after bath with a towel and apply powder to the area. Dip the clothes in hot water especially the undergarments and wash them. Sweating increases the spread of ringworm. As told before wipe the area dry and apply powder to the area.

Vaginal Discharge - When Should You Be Worried About It!

Vaginal discharge is a normal physiological phenomenon, in which the consistency of vaginal discharge varies throughout the cycle. Healthy vaginal discharge is clear or white in colour, with normal and non-offensive odour. Sometimes right before menstruation, your vaginal discharge may hold a brownish tinge.

The consistency of the discharge varies mostly on the hormonal changes in the body. When the levels of oestrogen are low, the cervical mucus that is liberated as discharge may be perceived as sticky and thick. When the oestrogen levels rise up, the discharge becomes wetter, more stretchy and clearer. Also, after ovulation, the consistency becomes thicker again.

When should you worry about the vaginal discharge?

  1. Greenish, greyish or absurdly brownish in colour
  2. When the discharge appears thicker than normal
  3. When the discharge is more than normal
  4. When it smells absurd like fishy or rotten meat like smell
  5. Pus like discharge
  6. White with cottage cheese like discharge
  7. When the discharge is associated with bloody discharge and burning sensation, rash or soreness.

Diseases caused by vaginal discharge

  1. Yeast Infection: The vaginal discharge is cottage cheese like and may be associated with itching of the vulva. This is also called as thrush. It can be treated easily with antifungal medications such as Fluconazole or Cotrimoxazole.
  2. Vaginitis: Yellowish offensive discharge, which may be profuse, associated with itching and abdominal pain.
  3. Trichomoniasis: This disease is asymptomatic in most cases and you may notice purulent discharge.

Ways to prevent Fungal infections

Hi friends. I am Dr. Rohit Batra, from Derma World Skin and Hair Clinics in Rajouri Garden and New Rajendra Nagar. And today we’re going to talk about fungal infections, or as you all call, jock itch . It is becoming very prevalent in our society where both men and women are suffering from itching in rural areas and other body parts. No matter what you have been using, it doesn’t go. The reason behind that is, just like the fungus grows on your bread in the household and the bread lies in a hot and humid climate, fungus can grow on your body, especially in inter tribulus area or the pores of the body, because it finds sugar that is available in our body, sweat, and there is no aeration in these areas which remain closed, so fungus can grow there rapidly.

Now because people have been using all sort of OTC products that are available in the chemist without going to a dermatologist, then they apply these creams, which most of them contain steroids. Till the time you are applying these creams, the symptoms vanish, the itching goes away, but only to come back as soon as you stop these creams. So if you are having a fungal infection in any of these body parts, it’s better to go to a dermatologist and get rid of it for once and al, otherwise if you keep applying these creams, the fungus keeps on growing in the body, affects other areas, and can give rise to a very massive fungal infection.

The various creams that are available as an OTC product should not be used, because they just control the symptoms and not the cause. If you want to get treated for your fungal infections, you need to visit a dermatologist. You need to take the course for two to three weeks for oral antifungals, something like terbinafine, something like itraconazole or fluconazole, along with few creams containing other aliconazole, and once this thing goes off, one should take care that while you are bathing, you should make sure that after bathing you dry yourself properly, you don’t use wet clothes.

If you are going out for any sort of sport of you are going for gymming, or you are going for running, make sure these clothes, which get drenched, are not worn without getting them washed properly. And once you use a towel for more than two days, it should be properly washed, and should be dried in sun, and then only used. Such things are becoming very prevalent in our society, and families are being affected with fungal infections. So don’t share your clothes, don’t share your towels, and make sure that you don’t spread these infections to your family.

So if you are suffering from any sort of fungal infection, maybe it’s jock itch, tinea floris, tinea corporis, visit us. You can either visit us through our Lybrate profile, or you can call us on Derma World Skin and Hair Clinics in New Rajendra Nagar, or Rajouri Garden, and we can help you get rid of this fungal infection for once and all. Happy healing.

Candida Skin Infection - How It Can Be Managed?

Candida Skin Infection - How It Can Be Managed?

Fungal infection of the skin and mucous membranes is very common. The most common species of fungus causing these infections is Candida albicans. They are present in abundance in the skin and mucous membranes and have a protective function. However, when immunity is compromised, these grow to a significant number and infection results. Some of the most common candida infections and ways to manage them are outlined below.

Athlete’s foot, nail fungal infections, diaper rash, jock itch, oral thrush, and vaginal yeast infections are the most common candida skin infections. Though they can occur anywhere, they are most common in the intertriginous areas, where two skins come in close contact, like the groin area, the armpits, the corners of the mouth, area between the toes and between the fingers. Sweat and mucous facilitate their growth further, as they provide a moist environment for their growth.

In addition, poor hygiene, hot/humid weather, and constricting clothing can lead to increased chances of developing candida infections. Patient conditions like obesity, infants, diabetics, hypothyroidism, inflammatory disorders, pregnancy, damp weather, and immunosuppressed conditions like AIDs are definite risk factors. Identifying the infection is the biggest step towards treatment. There could be rashes, patches, flaking, cracks, soreness, and erythema, white or red lesions in the mouth or genital area.

Management:

A little precaution can help in preventing infections and there are definitely ways to treat the condition also.
If someone is immunosuppressed or has other predisposing factors, it is advisable to take precautions as listed below to avoid candida infections.

  1. Keep the intertriginous areas clean, could be by bathing more frequently or using sponge baths
  2. Wear loose clothing so the skin in the areas like groynes and armpits are not irritated
  3. Diaper skin management
  4. Keep the toenails and feet area clean
  5. During pregnancy, wear loose clothing and dry thoroughly after showers to avoid infection
  6. Frequently change inner garments and socks
  7. During warm weather, wear open-toed footwear so there is adequate aeration
  8. Take supplements like multivitamins to maintain good immunity levels

Treatment:

While treatment of one-off candida infections is not uncommon, people who are prone to recurrent infections need more stringent management. In one off infections, topical anti fungal agents like lotions, powder, ointments or creams are sufficient. These could contain anti fungal agents like ketoconazole or fluconazole. It is important that these stay in touch with the skin surface for about 10 to 15 minutes.

In moderately severe infections, a course of oral anti fungal agent is used, sometimes for up to 2 weeks depending on the severity of the symptoms. IV anti fungal agents may be used in more severe and widespread cases like seen in AIDS patients. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Dermatologist.

Inflammation of The Vagina - Could it be Vaginitis?

MBBS, MD - Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Advanced Infertility

Inflammation of The Vagina - Could it be Vaginitis?

Vaginitis is the inflammation of one’s vagina accompanied by pain during intercourse, mild vaginal bleeding, painful urination, vaginal itching or a considerable change in the amount, odor and color of the vaginal discharge.
Causes:
1. A certain level of bacteria is normally found in one’s vagina (lactobacilli). Now if this count is outnumbered by the other bacteria (anaerobes), the balance in the vagina gets disrupted giving rise to bacterial vaginosis. Such kind of vaginitis usually stems from sexual intercourse with multiple sex partners.
2. Yeast infection occurs due to an overgrowth of fungal organisms in one’s vagina, especially Candida Albicans.
3. Trichomoniasis caused by the one celled microscopic parasite ‘Trichomonas Vaginalis’ generally spreads through sexual intercourse with an infected partner. The condition also makes one vulnerable to various sexually transmitted infections.
4. Spermicidal products, scented detergents, perfumed soaps, douches, vaginal sprays or foreign objects such as tampons that were not taken out or tissue paper might trigger allergic reactions or irritation in the vaginal tissues.
5. Surgical removal of the ovaries or reduced estrogen count after menopause might cause thinning of the vaginal lining, thereby resulting in vaginal burning, dryness or irritation.

Treatments:
1. For Bacterial vaginosis, your doctor might advise the application of clindamycin cream or metronidazole gel as well as metronidazole tablets which are to be taken orally.
2. Yeast infections might be treated with an anti-fungal suppository or cream, for instance, tioconazole, butoconazole, clotrimazole or miconazole. Oral medication, such as fluconazole is also administered to treat the same.
3. Metronidazole or tinidazole tablets are prescribed for Trichomoniasis.
4. Estrogen in the form of rings, tablets or vaginal creams is effective in treating low estrogen level after menopause.
5. For non-infectious vaginitis primarily caused by objects, such as tampons, sanitary napkins, laundry detergent or new soap, it is essential to pinpoint the source of the irritation and avoid them. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Gynaecologist.
