    How does this medication work?

This medication inhibits bacterial RNA polymerase which is the enzyme responsible for the transcription of DNA. Rifampicin binds and prevents RNA synthesis by blocking elongation and synthesis of bacterial proteins. It blocks the bond between nucleotides in the RNA backbone. Also, it works by inhibiting the enzyme arabinosyl transferase and stops mycobacterium cell wall synthesis by inhibiting the polymerization of arabinolgycan which is an essential component of cell wall synthesis. Lastly, Isoniazid is an inactive compound which is known as a prodrug. It needs to be activated by the catalase of bacteria. Once Isoniazid has been activated it brings about inhibition of the synthesis of the mycoloic acids.
