(Treatment, Procedure, Cost And Side Effects)

Thyroid And Calcium Supplement - Are They Necessary?

MBBS, Post Graduate Diploma In Diabetology (PGDD)

Thyroid And Calcium Supplement - Are They Necessary?

The thyroid gland is a small butterfly-shaped gland located at the base of the neck. This gland is responsible for regulating metabolism by releasing thyroid hormones. The underproduction or overproduction of these hormones could affect every aspect of an individual’s health. One of the minerals affected by the functioning of the thyroid gland is calcium.

Calcium is a very important mineral for the human body. It not only builds a strong skeletal structure but also helps with muscle contractions, blood clotting and regulates enzyme levels. The thyroid gland and the parathyroid gland are directly responsible for calcium regulation in the body. This is done through the calcitonin hormone. This hormone is released by the thyroid gland. Calcitonin helps regulate the calcium levels in the blood and keeps it from accumulating in the bloodstream.

Because of the important role played by calcium in our bodies, calcium supplements are the easiest way to maintain the calcium levels in the body. However, for patients suffering from hypothyroidism, this may not be a good idea. Calcium supplements can interfere with thyroid medication such as levothyroxine. Instead, calcium can be sourced from the food being eaten.

Milk is not the only food group that provides calcium to the body. Some of the other foods that you could get calcium from include:

  1. Beans: All legumes are a great source of calcium. Of these, winged beans have the highest concentra5tion of calcium. One cup of winged beans can give the body up to 24% of its required amount of calcium.
  2. Fish: Fish such as sardines and salmon are great sources of calcium. Between these two types of fish, sardines have more calcium. These can be eaten fresh or tinned.
  3. Cheese: Parmesan cheese has the highest concentration of calcium. However, all other types of cheese contain calcium as well. As a rule of thumb, soft cheese has a lower amount of calcium as compared to hard cheese.
  4. Seeds: Seeds are a powerhouse of nutrition. One of the minerals, these tiny seeds are rich in is calcium. one tablespoon of sesame seeds has 9% calcium while one tablespoon of poppy seeds has 13% calcium.
  5. Yogurt: Yogurt is a rich source of probiotics and calcium. One cup of yogurt a day can give the body up to 30% of its calcium requirements. This includes full-fat yogurt as well as low-fat yogurt. Greek yogurt also contains calcium but in a lower concentration as compared to regular yogurt.

9 Amazing Facts About Arthritis!

9 Amazing Facts About Arthritis!

Arthritis is a disease that affects the joints, muscles and soft tissues, which cause stiffness, disability and pain. It is one of the complex conditions and has also been discovered in the remains of people living more than 500,000 years ago.

Although it is usually found in people above 50 years, in rare cases, it can affect younger generations as well. The three most common forms are osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia and rheumatoid arthritis. The symptoms of some arthritis, such as rheumatoid arthritis, include the following:

These symptoms typically last more than two weeks.

Few facts about arthritis
Most people, even though diagnosed with arthritis, are unaware of the following facts:

  1. Snakes, bees, and ants: After years of treatment, some people have turned to specific natural therapies that come from snakes, bees and ants. As per a study by researchers in Brazil, bee sting venom helps reduce the symptoms of arthritis.
  2. Gout is a form of arthritis: Repeated flare-ups, pain and swelling are the result of uric acid, built around the joints. This can be due to genetic predisposition, some diseases and consumption of excess meat, seafood, fructose-sweetened drinks or alcohol. The bunion joint that connects the big toe to the foot is often affected first in people who have gout.
  3. Children get arthritis too: Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis is the most common amongst children and affects kids between the ages of 1 - 3 or 8 - 12 years. It strikes girls about twice as often as boys. As per a recent survey, 1 in every 250 children globally suffers from arthritis.
  4. Injuries increase the risk of arthritis: Injured joints are prone to develop osteoarthritis (OA). People with knee injuries have six times the chance, while those with hip injuries are three times more likely to develop OA.
  5. Climate cannot cure: People have a misconception that wet, cold climates cause arthritis rather than a warmer climate. Unfortunately, that's not the case. Orthopaedics confirmed the same frequency for both warm and cold climates. However, sore joints find warm atmosphere more soothing.
  6. Obesity increases the risk: Excess weight is one of the primary causes of osteoarthritis, especially for weight-bearing joints like knees, and to less extended hips. But there is also a higher risk to joints like ankles, back, big toes and hands.
  7. Animals can also develop: Not only humans but animals like dogs, cats and others can also develop osteoarthritis. The symptoms are almost the same as the ones faced by a human. It can also lead to a loss of appetite, which can cause weight loss.
  8. Race counts: Both whites and African Americans experience arthritis at similar rates. However, blacks have higher chances of severe joint pain and limitations in activity as compared to whites.
  9. Women are prone to arthritis: Statistics show that women have a significantly higher risk for all types of arthritis except gout. As per the Arthritis Community, Research & Evaluation Unit, women are twofold more prone to arthritis than men.

Hello doctor, Being an athlete, daily after my running and workouts I eat soybeans and groundnuts which I put in water or make them sprouted night before I am eating these from last one month But someone suggested me that I am doing wrong and saw in many articles on internet also that eating soybean can lead to grow cancer cells and eating is also not good Now I am confused Being protein rich of soybeans I started eating them and now I am confused Please suggest me to eat soya or not and if not Then what?

MBBS, MD-Psychiatry
Psychiatrist, Bangalore
According to the American Cancer Society, when it comes to soyabean, isoflavones may act like estrogen, but they have anti-estrogen properties as well. Some studies even show that people who ate soy were less likely to get breast cancer. “The current research does not support avoiding whole soy foods, even for cancer patients or survivors,” McKindley says. Soybeans, soy nuts and edamame all contain fiber. And a diet high in fiber may lower your risks for several cancers, including colorectal cancer. SO DONT WORRY SOYABEAN IS THE RICH SOURCE OF PROTEIN. RESEARCH DOES NOT IMPLICATE SOYABEAN LONELY IS RESPONSIBLE FOR CANCER. FOR CANCER TO OCCUR ,MULTIPLE RISK FACTORS WORK IN TANDEM FOR CANCER TO OCCUR EG-FAMILY HISTORY, EXPOSURE TO CARCINOGENS-TOBBACCO/ALCOHOL/TAR/PAINTS, GENETIC FACTORS.

PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome)
Hello, everyone. I am glad that you are watching this video. I am consultant gynecologist at Max Superspeciality Hospital, Shalimar Bagh, Max Hospital in Pitampura and at my own clinic in Pitampura. Today I would like to talk about PCOS or Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome.

It is a very common in female endocrine disorder which is increasing tremendously. The prevalence of it now is 2.2 to 26% which itself is very high. NOw, what is it about? So, this problem is about women's hormones, they get out of balance. Then it makes the problems in periods, difficult for the women to conceive or to get pregnant. If left untreated, it can lead to long term problems such as Diabetes Mellitus, Heart disease, and endocrinal cancer.

What happens in PCOS?

In PCOS, the sex hormones get out of balance. So, the male hormones increase more than a normal range. Now, what do they do?

They stop Ovulation, they cause acne, increase the facial and the body hair.

The second factor it involves is Insulin.THe Insulin resistance is caused because of PCOS. The insulin resistance causes obesity, weight gain and then later it may cause Diabetes Mellitus. The causes of PCOS is clearly not known but they run in the family. The girls which are affected from PCOS, they get it either from the mother's family or the father's family.

So, the symptoms of PCOS are;

Hirsutism
Extra facial and the body hair
Thinning of hair from the scalp
Infertility problems
Irregular periods
Depression
Now, coming to the diagnosis,

There are a lot of studies which are done for PCOS. PCOD is defined as any two of these three features, those are;

The periods that come after more than 45 days or periods which comes less than 8 times in a year.
Hyperandrogenism, Menstrual problems.
Ultrasound features suggested of PCOS.
So, the polycystic shows up multiple cysts, that is 10 in number, 2-8 mm in size and bulky ovaries each.

This is how we diagnose. Now coming to the treatment.

There are 3 key treatments for PCOS;

Regular exercise- Walking is a very good exercise that most people can do. Then depending on your choice, you can swim, dance, play etc.
Healthy diet- In diet, you should take green leafy vegetables, fruits, whole grains, nuts, beans, milk etc. You should avoid the intake of saturated fats like meat, cheese, fried food items, sugary food. Starchy food such as potatoes, cakes, sweet potato, maida, sooji, besan etc. You have to quit smoking if you are indulged in that too.
Weight control- In weight control, most women benefit even with 5% of weight loss that would help them regulate their hormones better.
The women's hormones come into balance, the periods come on time, it gets easier for the patient to get pregnant. All these favourable changes take place when the patient follows all these three steps.

Now there are pills that we can give to the patients to help her regulate her own hormones. Now, there are two types of pill;

One is birth control pills o0r oral contraceptive pills. These pills help to balance sex hormones.
Metformin pills are the insulin sensitizers. They tackle the INsulin resistance in the PCOS patients.
Now, all these help in balancing the hormones of PCOS patients. If a patient is suffering from depression because of PCOS, then he would advise her to do some exercises that help to elevate the mood or to consult a counsellor or a gynaecologist.

So, if you want to contact me, you can do so through Lybrate or you can come to my clinic directlywhich is in Pitampura.

Thanks for the patient hearing.

How to prevent Heart Disease
Good morning ladies and gentlemen. I am Dr. JS Khatri and I am a non-material cardiologist and practicing in Gurgaon, Palam vihar. Today I would like to aware you people or the whole population of India or the world about the preventable heart disease among which coronary artery disease which is called extremist heart disease is a very important cause of death all over the world.

What is actually coronary heart disease and extremist heart disease?

- So coronary heart disease is a disease of the corollary which supplies blood to the heart and eventually causes ischaemia which leads Death all over the world.

So what could be the risk factor?

- The important risk factor which causes heart diseases are categorized in two ways

Modifiable risk factors
Non modifiable Risk factor.
See among the modifiable risk factors we have to see that like age l, sex ethnicity and genetics which we cannot modify. I hope you understand age ethnicity like black niggeros they are more prone to heart disease. They are twice prone to the heart diseases as to the whites and we Asian races.

Now among the non-modifiable risk factor which encounters more on daily basis in our daily to life are most importantly is diabetes.
