Sleeve Gastrectomy Treatment!

What is sleeve gastrectomy treatment?

Sleeve gastrectomy treatment also known as a vertical sleeve gastrectomy is a type of weight loss surgery. This kind of operation is generally performed laparoscopically i.e. insertion of small instruments inside the upper abdomen, through small incisions. In a sleeve gastrectomy operation, the surgeon removes around 80% of the stomach, leaving behind a tube-shaped abdomen in the shape and size of a banana.

How does a sleeve gastrectomy procedure work?

Weight loss can sometimes take a toll on you physically as well as mentally. If exercise or a healthy diet does not yield any results for you, then you can go for a sleeve gastrectomy surgery.
In order to understand how a sleeve gastrectomy works, you will need to understand the procedure in a comprehensive manner.

• Prior to the operation

Once you are in the operation theatre, the doctor will administer general anaesthesia to put to to sleep, before beginning with the procedure.

• During the operation

The surgeon will perform certain sleeve gastrectomy procedures by making open and large incisions in the stomach. Usually, this procedure is done laparoscopically using several small incisions. He/she will then insert small instruments in the abdomen. After this, the surgeon creates a thin sleeve by getting rid of the curved and large part of the abdomen and by stapling the stomach in a vertical manner. A sleeve gastrectomy surgery normally takes one to two hours at most to perform.

• After the operation

Once you are done with your sleeve gastrectomy surgery, your diet must be non-carbonated and sugar-free liquids for the initial 7 days. After 7 days, you can start having pureed foods for the next 3 weeks. Gradually you can start increasing your meal portion and eat normal foods within 4 weeks of your surgery.

Any surgery for that matter can seem scary, but it does not necessarily have to be. In order to ensure zero to minimum risks, make sure that you choose the right doctor and the hospital to get your surgery done.
