Hi,

I am Dr. Renu Keshan Mathur, Gynaecologist and today I will talk about recurrent pregnancy loss. It is a very traumatic condition. It affects about 2-5% of all married couples. 2 or more abortions less than 20 weeks is called recurrent pregnancy loss. It is becoming very common as marriages are late, people are under stress and they want to have the baby soon. But the main causes are a uterine abnormality. If the shape if the uterus is not okay which is a genetic forming condition. Not much can be done about it. That causes pregnancy aborted at an early age. Another common cause is autoimmune diseases which are called antiphospholipid diseases. Metabolic and other hormonal diseases can also cause this problem. And the 4th common cause is genetic abnormality which causes the wrong formation of the baby. This is very troublesome for the patient as well as for the doctor because the patient is always stressed out.

The lifestyle is bad nowadays. Patients are not getting enough rest. There is a tendency to be involved in junk food, alcohol and smoking. So, all these things have to be changed. When you plan for pregnancy, you should start taking folic acids 3 months before. And try to switch over to a healthy lifestyle. Include green vegetables, fruits, a protein-rich diet. Do regular exercises. Now once this happens, the patient is very stressed out. This does not mean that it is going to happen in your subsequent pregnancy also. But care has to be taken. If still, we do not see any proper results than we go for surgical treatment to alter the condition of the uterus whether it is the shape or extra membrane in between.

And then subsequent pregnancy will be successful. Hormone support is given if there is a hormone imbalance, usually, progesterone is given. Then uncontrolled diabetes and hyperthyroidism will be treated. For antiphospholipid syndrome which is an autoimmune disease, hyperin is very successful in that treatment. But a lot of contribution is made by the patient side reassurance from the Dr. And the support of the family. Rest, healthy lifestyle is required. Now people will ask, will we have a normal delivery. So, this is a very late stage to concern. Go ahead with a healthy pregnancy then we can talk about. That takes care of recurrent pregnancy loss causes and treatment.

Thank You.
