Pollution is on the rise throughout the country. Be it air pollution, soil pollution or water pollution. Pollution prevention has assumed much significance globally after the recognition of its harmful effects on our health and the environment.

All of us have a duty towards the planet to keep it healthy and beautiful. As a part of the planet, we all have to play our part in undoing the damage pollution has caused.

Before we talk about how to control pollution, let’s look at the different types of pollution –

1. Water pollution

The primary source of water pollution is run-off water from urban, industrial, and agricultural sites. This water generally contains harmful chemicals that can contaminate the water source. Water coming from agricultural lands contains pesticides that lead to water contamination. When people drink contaminated water, multiple health issues can occur.

2. Air pollution

Carbon monoxide is the main culprit of air pollution. When fossil fuels burn, they emit carbon monoxide. Vehicles too release this gas into the air. Smog is a dense layer of carbon monoxide that generally envelopes many major cities in India during winters.

Air pollution can increase the incidences of asthma, lung cancer, and chronic bronchitis. Excessive fossil fuel burning can also lead to acid rain.

3. Soil pollution

When industries or societies don’t dispose of chemical materials properly, soil pollution can occur. Even farmers using excessive pesticides harm the soil. Over time, soil pollution can cause the pollutants to enter the crops grown on it, and eventually the food chain.

4. Light pollution

Urban areas require a lot of unnecessary lighting that disrupt the migration cycles of birds.

5. Noise pollution

Noise pollution is another problem that is on the rise right now. Blaring loudspeakers, honking cars can cause irritability and anxiety.

To keep a check on pollution – whether it is land, air, or water – preventive measures are a must. This means the society at large must make a conscious effort to protect the environment. This means the government should pass the necessary laws and ensure strict implementation.

Here are some ways you can contribute towards making the planet cleaner and greener –

  1. Avoid smoking.

  2. The gasoline you use in your vehicle should be unleaded.

  3. Share a ride instead of using your personal car, whenever possible.

  4. Ensure that your vehicle is fit and well-maintained so that the vehicular emissions stay at an acceptable level.

  5. You can also turn to eco-friendly transport like battery-operated cars and bicycles.

  6. Avoid waste incineration.

  7. Follow the 3R principle. Reduce, reuse, and recycle. This way you can avoid unnecessary wastage.

  8. Use your kitchen waste as compost. This way not only will you generate less waste but also have cheap manure to improve soil health.

  9. Avoid the use of plastic. Turn to biodegradable materials whenever possible.

  10. Create more greenery around you. Plant trees, ensure that you plant trees that are suited to the climate and surroundings. Trees play a major role in reducing air pollution.

  11. Turn to solar power. If you live in an area where you receive sunlight for a major portion of the year, you can utilize the sun’s energy to power your electric appliances.

We have reached a stage where if we continue on the current path, then there will be massive problems with our planet. Thus, this is a time when action is needed to change the direction where our planet is heading. This is why you should follow the steps mentioned above to reduce your footprint on the planet and ensure that we pass on a better planet to our next generation.
