Gum diseases cause severe toothaches and are often associated with infections. In some cases if the damage is severe and is beyond repair, then a tooth extraction surgery becomes mandatory to remove the tooth. Dental extraction treatments are of two types, a simple extraction and a surgical extraction. In a simple extraction, the tooth is loosened with an instrument called elevator. Then a forceps is used for the tooth pulling. In a surgical extraction, a small incision is made into the gum to surgically remove the broken tooth. In both the cases local anesthetic is given to the patients to numb the pain. An x ray of the area is taken prior to an extraction to identify if there are any complications. After the tooth is pulled, cotton is stuffed in the socket to prevent the oozing of blood. The numbness will generally subsidize, a few hours after the surgery. It is also important to note that bleeding will occur for a period of 24 to 48 hours, however in case of excessive bleeding please check with the dentist. Cold liquids can be had on the first day and soft mashed foods can be had from subsequent days. A basic tendency to probe the empty tooth socket may happen, but it is advisable to curb this as prolonged probing can cause discomfort. Use luke warm water for rinsing and after a period of few days, general diet can be had.
