A condition of the throat usually accompanied by pain is known as Sore Throat. The viral infections causing it include common cold, laryngitis, mononucleosis, mumps, influenza, etc. Bacterial infections can also be the cause which includes inflammation of tonsils, adenoids, epiglottitis, uvulitis or sexually transmitted diseases. The symptoms caused are difficulty in swallowing, pain, tenderness in neck, burning sensation at the back of the throat, runny nose, sneezing, cough, fatigue, fever, belly pain, etc.

The ENT specialist will examine the symptoms to determine if the infection is viral or bacterial. Rapid tests are also recommended along with throat culture test.

Mild Sore Throat can be treated at home by gargling with warm salt water. Drinking plenty of warm fluids and avoiding allergens and irritants also helps in faster recovery from Sore Throat. Antibiotics may be given to treat any bacterial infection causing Sore Throat.
