Caused by eating food or drinking water that is contaminated by bacterium Vibrio Cholerae, Cholera is a widely spread infectious disease that can cause severe watery diarrhoea that can lead to extreme dehydration. Cholera can even be fatal if not treated at the right time. Cholera is most common in places that have poor sanitation facilities. The most prominent symptom of the disease is watery diarrhoea with or without vomiting. Rapid heart rate, increased thirst and muscle cramps are other symptoms.
HOW IS CHOLERA DIAGNOSED?
The diagnosis is usually carried out by the general physician or a specialist from the gastrointestinal department. Lab tests will be carried out to test the urine, stool and blood for the presence of the bacteria as well as physical examination.
HOW IS CHOLERA TREATED?
Cholera requires immediate treatment because the disease can cause death within hours. The various ways to treat Cholera are by:
• Intravenous fluids.
• Zinc supplements.
