Bone tumors are when cells divide abnormally and uncontrollably, they can form a mass or lump of tissue. This lump is called a tumor. A bone tumor may be cancerous (malignant) or noncancerous (benign). They often occur in areas of the bone that grow rapidly. Possible causes are genetic defects, radiation exposure and injury.
HOW IS BONE TUMORS DIAGNOSED?
It is diagnosed by using the following tests:
1. Blood test
2. X-Ray/CT scan/MRI scan
3. Needle biopsy/Incisional biopsy
HOW IS BONE TUMORS TREATED?
Benign tumors that are not too big may not require any treatment. However periodic review of the tumor should be done to ensure that it does not become malignant. Oncologists may treat malignant bone tumors depending on the type of tumor through chemotherapy, surgery or radiation therapy.
