My mother 63 years is suffering from parkinson (PD) since 2013 is on syndopaplus (7 am&12 pm) and syndopa (3 pm) medication 3 times a day when syndopa withdraws thereby inducing stiffness & rigidity resulting in seizure thereby finding very hard to move and not even able to getup from bed or chair without assistance. Neurologist has now prescribed Bromocriptine 2.5 mg along with syndopa (twice 7 am & 7 pm) to mitigate syndopa side effect. Can this be taken at 7 am and 3 pm instead of 7 pm as the last syndopa taken is at 3 pm or any other alternatives suggestions is welcome.

Simple answer is No. Syndopa has very short effective concentration in blood & hence as soon as it's blood levels begin to decrease, thereby decreasing it's brain levels, your mother starts getting movement related difficulties If you feel she is not getting optimal treatment, discuss with your doctor about other effective medicines like Ropinirole, pramirole etc to increase efficiency of Syndopa combination. But don't change time of medication administration.

Parkinsons disease is a neuro degenerative disease. Unfortunately there is no permanent treatment for this condition. For initial symptom relief doctors give anticholinergics, antihistaminics, but latter dopamine agonists or dopamine precursures (levodopa) is needed. I your case, it appears to be an early onset and already advanced case of parkinsonism which is associates with high grade dementia, rigidity, tremour, inability to walk. In this condition levodopa+carbidopa/benserazide-. 4-. 8g/day or ropinirole or pramiprexole might be needed. Along with that, regular physiotherapy will help a bit. Proper nurshing care may be needed. Thank you. Take care.

My father has a disease named Parkinson. Will you please let me know how to cure it.

MD - Psychiatry, MBBS
Psychiatrist, Patna
Parkinsons disease is a neurological illness. It has chronic and gradually progressive course. It occurs due to some neurochemical activity/ imbalance in brain in the form of reduced dopaminergic activity and increased cholinergic activity. Medicines are available for treatment of this disorder like levo-dopa, syn-dopa, carbi-dopa, ropinirole, pramipexole, amantadine, trihexyphenidyl, benztropine etc. You may consult a neurologist or physician who may start the therapy at the earliest. With medicines symptoms can be controlled but medicines should be taken for years and may be for whole life. In later years of life he may require your assistance in daily care also. I wish your father a better health.

Under Eye Dark Circles - Natural Remedies For It!

Under Eye Dark Circles - Natural Remedies For It!

For long, under eye dark circles have been associated with stress, fatigue, or lack of sound sleep. However, there are a lot more factors that contribute to the appearance of dark circles. It is a well-known fact that the skin under our eyes is thinner as compared to the other body parts.

Dark circles appear when there is a dilation of the blood vessels present under eyes. It is these dilated and swollen blood vessels that appear as dark circles under the eyes.

The dilation, inflammation, irritation or rupture of the blood vessels can be an outcome of

  1. An increased use of eye makeups, skin allergies, dermatological conditions such as Eczema.
  2. Increased exposure to sun rays.
  3. Dark circles can be a hereditary condition.
  4. The dark circles can also be an outcome of the eye bags or protruding fats pockets.
  5. With age, the lower eyelid (along with the rest of the face) may lose volume.

Treatments for Dark Circles

  1. In case the dark circles are an outcome of allergies or eczema, consult a doctor. The use of over the counter antihistamine medicines can reduce the swelling and the puffiness to a great extent, thereby reducing the dark circles. Caution: Avoid self-medication. The medicines used should be the doctor recommended.
  2. Cosmetic Blepharoplasty: This is a surgical procedure to enhance the appearance of your eyes by taking care of problems including dark circles, eye bags, droopy eyelids. Depending on the requirement, Blepharoplasty helps to get rid of the excess fats, muscles, skin or tissues either from the upper or lower eyelids or both (lower eyelids in the case of dark circles) to provide significant improvement.
  3. Chemical peels and Acugel therapy: Peels and acugel treatment help in reducing dark circles and eye bags to a great extent.
  4. The Laser therapy that uses an intense light beam into the target skin area (in this case, the skin under the eyes) can play an instrumental role in reducing the dark circles, thereby making the eyes look younger and rejuvenated.
  5. One can also try out some home and natural remedies such as
    • Potato, known for its bleaching properties can be used to deal with dark circles. Extract the potato juice (you can grate the potato). Dip a cotton in the potato juice and apply it on your closed eyes ensuring the dark circles are covered. Rinse off the eyes after 10-15 minutes with cold water. You can carry out the same procedure with rose water to reduce the dark circles.
    • Applying chilled cucumber slices or chilled green tea bags on the dark circles will produce fruitful results.
    • Packed with Vitamin E, almond oil can work wonders to reduce the dark circles. Gently massage the dark circles with almond oil before retiring to bed and then rinse it off (use cold water) the next morning.
  6. In addition to this, make sure you follow a healthy sleep routine (6-8 hours of daily sleep is a must).
  7. Take care of your diet. Foods such as eggs, salmon, green tea or avocados can produce significant improvement in the case of dark circles.
  8. Keep the body hydrated.

Can Endometriosis Cause Infertility & Miscarriages?

MBBS, MD - Obstetrtics & Gynaecology, DNB (Obstetrics and Gynecology), Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (MRCOG)

Can Endometriosis Cause Infertility & Miscarriages?

There can be a number of reasons that lead to infertility in women. Endometriosis is one of them. It is a benign condition where the endometrium, which includes the tissues that form the lining inside the uterus, grows outside the uterus. Apart from infertility, it may also cause pelvic pain in women.

There are no such symptoms of endometriosis apart from pelvic pain and it cannot be detected without surgery. Thus, it is very difficult to diagnose this disease and state how common it is. However, research says that the prevalence of this disease in women in their reproductive age is between 3 to 10 per cent.

It is found that endometriosis sometimes leads to infertility. Here is how:

Abdominal Adhesions and Infertility
Normally, the endometriosis implants develop in the abdomen. Then the body surrounds them with connective tissues. The reason for doing so is isolating the implants, so that they cannot harm your body.

Now, sometimes these adhesions can create a blockage in the opening of the fallopian tube or may also pinch off the fallopian tube. This will result in obstruction in the fertilisation of egg and the sperm and thus fertilization will not take place; so there are no chances of conceiving. These obstructions when diagnosed can be treated with surgery.

Secretions from implants
Endometrium plays a vital role in conception where the tissues secrete a wide variety of hormones and nutrients. Now, the endometrial implant also functions in the same way and secretes those hormones. The difference is that it does not deposit them in the lumen of the womb, and it is released in the abdominal cavity. In these substances, there may be some hormones that are responsible for infertility.

Prostaglandins
Prostaglandins are other hormones that are secreted by the endometrium normally. It helps in a lot of body processes that include various stages of menstrual cycle and pregnancy.

This hormone is required for a lot of functions such as ovulation, sperm mobility, and regression of corpus luteum, immune interaction, menstrual cramps and contraction of the uterus at birth.

Just like the endometrium, the implants also secrete these hormones. And the problem that is caused by the implant secreted prostaglandin hormone is that they are released in the abdomen and not in the womb. Moreover, they are not secreted at the right time, thus sending a wrong message to the brain.

A woman with a few days of pregnancy may face a miscarriage because the ovary will get a signal to start the menstrual cycle, and the womb lining where the egg is implanted will be expelled.
