About Ocurest Sterile Eye Drop

Ocurest Sterile Eye Drop is prescribed to temporarily relieve congestion, itching, and minor irritation, and to control hyperemia in patients with superficial corneal vascularity.

Ocurest eye drop is a sympathomimetic (alpha receptor agonist) that works in the eye to decrease congestion. This decongestant is used to alleviate redness, puffiness, and itchy, watering eyes due to colds, allergies, or eye irritations caused by smog and swimming. This medication is not to be used to relieve symptoms caused due to wearing contact lenses.

This drop is sometimes used in combination with other substances like lubricants such as glycerin, hypromellose or polyethylene glycol to help and protect the eyes from further irritation or dryness, and zinc sulphate which helps reduce redness and irritation.

Before starting this medication, inform your doctor about all your existing health conditions, problems and allergies to food or medicines. Also, tell your doctor if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or planning to conceive.

Usual dosage
  • Children <6 years: Not recommended for use due to CNS depression (especially in infants).
  • Children >6 years and Adults: Instill 1-2 drops into the conjunctival sac of the affected eye(s) every 3-4 hours; therapy generally should not exceed 3-4 days.

Do not use discoloured solutions. The patients must discontinue eye drops if visual changes or ocular pain occur. Notify physician of insomnia, tremor, or irregular heartbeat; stinging, burning, or drying of the nasal mucosa may occur. Do not use beyond 72 hours.

    How does this medication work?

    The drop induces systemic vasoconstriction to reduce blood flow in the nasal passage and conjunctiva. It achieves this by promoting the action of alpha adrenergic receptors present in these areas. This drop also works by triggering the TRPM8 receptors in the skin that are cold-sensitive. It does that by blocking calcium currents of the neuronal membrane. Through kappa-opioid receptor agonism, it can also produce analgesic characteristics.

        Increased toxicity: Anesthetics (discontinue mydriatic prior to use of anesthetics that sensitize the myocardium to sympathomimetics, ie, cyclopropane, halothane), MAO inhibitors, tricyclic antidepressants hypertensive reactions.

        Rebound congestion may occur with extended use; use with caution in the presence of hypertension, diabetes, hyperthyroidism, heart disease, coronary artery disease, cerebral arteriosclerosis, or long-standing bronchial asthma.
