We will need a picture to know the severity of allergic reaction and proper history since the condition will recur if the thing that you're allergic to is not withdrawn completely! So I would advise a video consultation for this. Till then you can take desloratidine 5 mg twice a day for the itching.

Dear Lybrateuser, - For your optimum function & alertness after a hectic day you require at least 7-8 hrs of sleep in the night, less sleep will cause lethargy, tiredness & difficulty to concentrate for a long time - if you sleep less then to freshen you you can take a short nap for 10 - 15 min whenever you find that you are not able to concentrate properly & feeling sleepy or lethargic - also to remain alert for long periods you have to have a well balanced diet with more of fruits, vegetables & whole grains, have plenty of oral fluids including 7-8 glasses of water for proper hydration as even mild dehydration will make you feel tired - also include 10 min of exercise in the morning or any other part of the day as it greatly helps in boosting our metabolism & hence energy supply to the body - destress by listening to music or take a walk in the open fresh air or any other activity which will freshen you up - keep intake of tea, coffee to the minimum 2-3 cups per day) as can cause acidity - napping for 5-10 min is not a disease it can refresh your brain & you will be able to concentrate better.

Dear Lybrateuser, - To remain alert & to concentrate on your studies, take some precautions - have a snack or light meal about half to one hour before studying (preferably have a protein snack) to provide you with constant energy so that you can concentrate properly, keep sipping water every 10-15 min as even mild dehydration can cause lethargy & tiredness, take a 5-10 min break every 1-2 hrs, get up from the chair & walk (you can revise your topic in your mind) destress by doing exercise (learn back exercise for strong spinal muscles), listening to music or going out in fresh air, try to sleep well for 6-7 hrs at night & get up fresh in the morning, also can do yoga, meditation in the morning to calm your mind - for back your chair should have a straight, firm back support, do some movement in the chair to reduce stiffness due to continuous sitting for long hrs, apply a pain relief gel if pain is more.

Brain Cancer - What can Trigger It?

MS - General Surgery, MBBS, MCh - Neuro Surgery
Neurosurgeon, Hyderabad
Brain Cancer - What can Trigger It?

Brain cancer is a disease of the brain in which cancer cells (malignant cells) arise in the brain tissue. Cancer cells grow to form a mass of cancer tissue (tumor) that interferes with brain functions such as muscle control, sensation, memory, and other normal body functions. Tumors composed of cancer cells are called malignant tumors, and those composed of mainly non-cancerous cells are called benign tumors. Cancer cells that develop from brain tissue are called primary brain tumors while tumors that spread from other body sites to the brain are termed metastatic or secondary brain tumors.

Prologue:

  1. Brain cancer is actually the abnormal growth and uncontrolled growth of the cancer cells in the brain, that forms a tumor in the brain.Tumours can be either benign or malignant.

  2. Benign brain tumours are abnormal collections of cells that reproduce slowly and usually remain separate from the surrounding normal brain.

  3. Malignant tumours reproduce and grow quickly. Their borders are hard to distinguish from the normal brain around them.

Symptoms:

There are few early symptoms of brain cancer, but as the tumour grows within the confines of the skull, it causes increased intracranial pressure and exerts pressure on the brain, causing signs to develop.

Brain cancer symptoms and signs are varied and depend on the area of the brain involved, but can include:

  1. Headaches.

  2. Seizures.

  3. Nausea and vomiting, which, CANSA reports, may be worse in the morning or after a sudden position change.

  4. Difficulty walking or clumsiness.

  5. Vision changes.

  6. Changes in alertness.

  7. Behavioural impairment.

Causes:

Brain cancer occurs when there is an uncontrolled growth of cancer cells in the brain that form a malignant brain tumor. The underlying cause of primary brain cancer, cancer that begins in the brain, is not known. Secondary brain cancer is caused by a cancer of another organ in the body, such as the breast, prostate, kidney, skin, or bone, that has spread to the brain.

What are the risk factors for brain cancer?

  1. Certain inherited conditions, including neurofibromatosis, Von Hippel-Lindau syndrome, Li-Fraumeni syndrome, and Turcot syndrome

  2. Personal history of cancer or family history of brain cancer

  3. Impaired immune system

  4. Radiation therapy of the head

Treatments Options:

Treatment

Surgery is the main form of treatment for brain tumors that lie within the membranes covering the brain or in parts of the brain that can be removed without damaging critical neurological functions. The goal is to remove the entire tumor, whenever possible, as a tumor may recur if any tumor cells are left behind. Radiation therapy and chemotherapy are generally used as secondary treatment for tumors that cannot be cured through surgery alone.

Stereotactic radiosurgery

Stereotactic radiosurgery is a treatment option that delivers a high concentration of radiation directly to the tumor in order to stop its growth, while delivering only a minimal dose of radiation to the surrounding tissue. Unlike conventional surgery, stereotactic radiosurgery does not require making an incision to remove the tumor. It can be especially effective in patients with many small metastatic brain tumors.

15 Habits That Lower Your Sperm Count!

There are a few very common things that a man consumes or does every day without even realizing, that they have a tendency to reduce his fertility. These causes start from drinking and could end with something as harmless as caffeine.

  1. Eating processed meat harms sperm quality.
  2. Excessive usage of laptop can also lead to reduction in sperm count because of the heat that a laptop releases.
  3. Hormonal imbalance also causes low sperm production.
  4. If a man is underweight or overweight, this could also lead to less production of sperm. So, a man should watch his weight before thinking of extending his family.

  7. Excessive stress also causes reduction in sperm count.

Chronic Respiratory Problems - How To Treat Them With Homeopathy?

Chronic Respiratory Problems - How To Treat Them With Homeopathy?

The lungs are highly prone to chronic problems. Be it asthma, bronchitis or COPD, these problems require chronic treatment and the patient is always on alert. Homeopathy believes that these are just symptoms of an underlying, deep-rooted cause and addressing the root cause can help in complete cure of symptoms. By working on the underlying problem, homeopathy attempts to:

  1. Prevent further damage to the organs; so disease progression is arrested
  2. Reduce dependency on steroids and bronchodilators, which is very common among most people with chronic respiratory disorders
  3. Natural and holistic treatment with minimal side effects

It is to be noted that different clinical presentations are treated with different compounds, and there are more than 25 compounds that can be used in people with chronic respiratory disorders. The doctor would choose the right compound depending on the presenting symptoms. Some of the commonly used compounds are listed below:

  1. Bryonia: In people with dry hacking cough and rusty sputum, this is useful. The symptoms are aggravated by any sort of motion and warm temperatures.
  2. Rumex: In people with dry/stringy cough, which is increased in cold temperatures and by talking, this medicine proves useful.
  3. Kali Bichromicum: Where the patient has yellow, sticky mucous which is worse in the morning, this compound is effective.
  4. Aconite: It is very useful in treating bronchitis, where there is frequent sneezing, restlessness, coryza-like symptoms or excessive perspiration. Its uniqueness is that it prevents development of a full-fledged bronchitis.
  5. Belladonna: This is useful in patients with bronchitis who have violent fever and distressing cough that is worse with lying down and at night. The coughing spells are dry and short with irregular breathing. There is also fullness in the chest with no pain, though children might cry with this fullness. There is increased drowsiness where patients sometimes doze off into a semiconscious state.
  6. Sulphur: It is very useful in people with chronic bronchitis, where the patient has significant rales (sounds due to air movement within the bronchi). This is accompanied by mucous that is thick and can contain pus. The patient could also suffer from bouts of suffocation.
  7. Bacillinum: It is widely used in people who tend to catch cold easily. The mucous membranes are highly irritated and the patient feels very congested.

Other useful compounds include Phosphorus, Mercurius, Antimonium tartaricum, Rumex, Puslatilla, Ipea, Chelidonium and Sulphur. As noted, with homeopathic compounds, the right compound is determined by multiple factors including the stage at which the infection is at the time of presentation, nature of the cough, type of mucus, aggravating or relieving factors, presence of a cold, overall health status, habits, etc. The doctor will identify the right compound for you after checking these, so you are advised not to self medicate. In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

What You Need To Know About Neuroplasticity?

MBBS Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, M.Ch - Neuro Surgery, FRCS (Ed) Neurosugery
Neurosurgeon, Gurgaon
What You Need To Know About Neuroplasticity?

The neurones in the brain are constantly reorganising their connections both functionally and physically according to the environment, your thinking and behaviour. This ability is known as neuroplasticity. Through neuroplasticity the nerve cells of brain can compensate for injury to some parts of the brain and enable a person to recover from stroke, birth abnormalities. It is also beneficial in treating autism, ADD, learning disabilities and helps manage obsessive compulsive disorders.

Here are seven things you should know about neuroplasticity.

  1. Change depends on the attentiveness of the brain: Neuroplasticity changes can only happen if the brain is alert and active. When the brain is active it releases neurochemicals that are necessary for the neurone connections to change. If a person is distracted to inattentive, these changes cannot happen.
  2. The more the effort; the bigger the change: Neuroplasticity changes depend on how motivated the person is to change or learn new tasks. For this reason, when it comes to using neuroplasticity for physiotherapy, it is essential to first deal with any depression or anxiety issues the patient might be having before attempting to rehabilitate them.
  3. It helps strengthen neural connections: Repetition of actions is one of the key elements of neuroplasticity in physiotherapy. Through this, the strength of neurone connections is strengthened to include sensory information, movement and cognitive patterns.
  4. It improves cell to cell connections: This is crucial to a patient’s rehabilitation as it increases reliability and makes a person more independent. In turn, this makes behaviour patterns more reliable.
  5. It helps predict actions: A task can usually be broken down into a series of smaller tasks. For example, feeding oneself can be broken down into steps that begin with lifting a spoon and filling it with food to finally putting the spoon into your mouth. Hence, along with completing an action, the brain must also know what to do next. Neuroplasticity helps improve this associative flow and allows the brain to predict the next step.
  6. Changes can be temporary or permanent: Initial changes due to neuroplasticity are temporary ad only if the brain determines the experience to be desired is this change made permanent. This is why when treating mobility issues, patients are not always able to repeat tasks in the same way.
  7. Memory guides the learning: When making new neural connections through neuroplasticity, the brain is taught to discard unsuccessful attempts and only remember the experience of the successful attempts. From here, adjustments are made to improve the connection.
