Ketotifen
About Ketotifen
Ketotifen, a first-generation non-competitive H1-antihistamine as well as mast cell stabilizer, is available in two forms. Firstly, the ophthalmic form is used for treating allergic conjunctivitis and secondly, the oral form is used to prevent anaphylaxis or asthma attacks, as well as different mast cell or allergic type health problems.
The ophthalmic form of Ketotifen relieves and prevents most seasonal allergies such as irritation or itchiness of eyes and starts working within a few minutes of usage. The effects of this drug have not yet been studied on children under three. Apart from its anti-histaminic activity, it acts as a leukotriene antagonist and also as a phoshodiesterase inhibitor.
Oral Ketotifen finds its use in the treatment of allergic problems like asthma, allergic conjunctivitis, chronic urticaria, exercise induced urticaria, allergic rhinitis, atopic dermatitis, cholinergic urticaria, cold induced urticaria and others. Recommended dosage of Ketotifen is 1mg twice daily for adults as well as for older children.
Common side effects of using Ketotifen are increased nasal bleeding, irritation, gain in weight, dry mouth, and headache. However very serious side effects due to the usage of this drug are not observed.
