Ergotamine

Ergotamine is used for the control, treatment and prevention of conditions such as migraine and vascular headache. It works by constricting the intracranial extracerebral blood vessels, thus helping treat aforementioned conditions.

Do not use Ergotamine if you are allergic to any of the ingredients present in it. Before using Ergotamine tell your doctor if you are using any prescription drugs, non-prescription drugs, or other herbal and dietary pills and supplements, if you are pregnant and/or breastfeeding, if you suffer from kidney or liver diseases, or if you have any upcoming surgeries. Also let your doctor know your history of medical problems, pre-existing diseases and current health conditions.

Ergotamine should be taken in doses prescribed by the doctor. Dosage depends on conditions such as medical condition, diet, age, and counteraction with other medicines.

Possible side effects of Ergotamine include nausea, lightheadedness, cyanosis, ischemia, bradycardia, and hypertension. Pressure upon the arm nerves or vessels causing numbness, tingling or temporary paralysis of the arm may result from: Sleeping with the hand under the head Sitting with the arm hanging over the back of a chair Wearing straps or carrying a bag or rucksack Inflated cuff during measuring blood pressure Raising the Arms Above the Level of the Heart Keeping the hand (s) above the level of the heart during work or sleep can prevent appropriate blood perfusion of the hands, and cause numbness, tingling or partial paralysis of the hand (s) within few minutes. Cold In cold weather, narrowing of the arteries in the hands and fingers can prevent appropriate blood supply and thus numbness, tingling, pain or temporary paralysis of the hands and fingers. Neurological examination. Testing of sensitivity of a particular arm dermatome can reveal which nerves are involved. Imaging. X-ray may reveal arthritis in the neck spine, or a broken arm bone. Myelography can reveal herniated disc or narrowed spinal canal. MRI and CT show soft tissues like tumors. Electromiography (EMG) and nerve conduction studies can show the nature of the nerve damage. Together with imaging they are important to evaluate the extent of brachial plexus injury. Blood tests can reveal diabetes, abnormalities in serum levels of sugar (diabetes), calcium, potassium, sodium, magnesium, vitamins B6 or B12, thyroxine (hypothyroidism), sex hormones (menopause). Cold simulation test can reveal Raynaud’s disease or phenomenon. TREATMENT OF ARM NUMBNESS OR TINGLING Firstly, the cause of numbness should be treated if possible. Hello. Gently move the razor on these areas. Medication: Start immediately with homoeopathic medication - Sulphur 200/ one dose daily in the morning for a week and 10 drops of Arnica Montana Q in 1/2 cup of water and apply on the face on the beard and the mustache area with a cotton swab. Then use the razor. Repeat the above process every 3rd day for few months. Also take a multivitamin Follihair/ 1 tablet daily for 3 months.

1. Use mild shampoo to wash hair (you can make your own shampoo using reetha and shikakai at home) 2. Stop using conditioners. Use natural conditioners like Egg, Yougurt and Lemon. 3. Massage your scalp with a mix of oils like olive, coconut, sesame, castor oil at night. 4. Apply raw amla juice on hair thrice a week. 5.Rub your scalp with the juice of white onion. 6.Use a paste of bhringraj on hair. 7.You can use some good hair packs like - fenugreek and yogurt, egg and green tea. 8.You can rinse your hair with organic apple cider vinegar after washing your hair to maintain ph balance of your hair. 9.Hair health depends on the amount of protein in your diet. One of the most debilitating conditions that anyone can experience is migraine. They can severely limit you by affecting your personal and professional life as you are in constant pain. Migraine can manifest in a type of headache with intense pain, an acute sensitivity to light, nausea and vomiting. Often described as a severe throbbing pain in the head, it may stop you from completing regular daily tasks and may delay or postpone your work.

How can migraines be treated?
The exact cause for these debilitating migraine pain hasn't been pointed out yet, but certain triggers such as stress, hormonal changes in the menstrual cycle, sun exposure, bright or flashing lights, among many others have been identified. The first line of defense for you would be to understand and identify what your triggers are. Once that is done, you can try and avoid them. If these still trigger a migraine or are about to trigger one, you can immediately take medications or steps to control it or at least lessen the pain to go through your day. Some of the options you can employ to this effect are mentioned below.

  1. Medications to prevent a migraine attack: The medications mentioned here are specialized treatments and can only be taken after a consultation with a doctor. If you are deemed as a candidate for preventative medication for migraines, then either one or a combination of drugs from the following may be prescribed to you.
    • Valproate and Topiramate are anti-seizure medications which can be used to prevent migraines.
    • Propranolol, a type of beta blocker and used for cardio vascular problems, has proven to be very effective in preventing migraines.
    • Onabotulinumtoxin A or a type of Botox, has shown a lot of promise in preventing migraines and is being slowly rolled out as a proper drug as a treatment option.
    • Certain antidepressants have also shown to be quite effective in reducing the symptoms of migraines as well.
  2. Medications to relieve pain: Some of the go to medications that help relieve your pain from migraine are mentioned below. Although some of them are OTC (over the counter) drugs, it is best advised that you consult with your doctor for medications which suit you better. The side effects of these medications can be bad and thus, it is not advised to continue them in the long run and to find other means to control pain from migraines. Some of the medications to relieve pain temporarily are:
    • Triptan is a drug used to treat severe migraines
    • Caffeine along with Ergotamine can also help dull the pain and deal with it.
    • Ibuprofen and aspirin and Acetaminophen are common pain killers that you can use
    • Codeine, which contains opioids are also used to treat this problem.
    • Metoclopramide and chlorpromazine are two examples of anti-nausea medications as vomiting along with nausea may frequently accompany your migraine.

(Ayurveda Tips to treat Headache)

Headache is pain & aches in the region of forehead, scalp, behind eyes, temple & neck, it can be mild, moderate to severe & can be acute or chronic in origin. Nature of the pain can be throbbing, squeezing, pulsating, constant, unrelenting, or intermittent. In ayurveda this is called as Shirashul. Primary reason of Shirashul is vitiated vata dosha, which gets combined with other vitiated doshas, accumulates in the region of head & causes pain. In ayurveda classic 11 types of primary headaches (Shirashul) are described. According to world health organization (WHO) headache is simple form of nervous disease & half of the population in the world suffers from headache at least once in a year.

There are many reasons & types of Headache but this is classified in 2 main types- Primary Headache & secondary headache.

Primary headache is due to pathology in the pain sensitive structure of head.  Secondary headache is symptom due to any other disease present in the body eg.-headache due to sinusitis or dental carries.

Most common reasons of primary headache are - Migraine, Cluster Headache & Tension Headache.

Migraine-

Migraine is excruciating or throbbing pain in the half of the head or all over the head. In ayurveda Migraine can be compared with Ardhavbhedak & Vata vitiated with pitta dosha is the main reason behind it. Modern science is unable to describe etiology (reasons) of this disease but in ayurveda classics some cause are mentioned like- excess alcohol & smoking, suppressing natural urges, late night sleeping, sleeping in a day, long time work in smoke & dust. Migraine comes in form of attack which can last for 45 minutes to 24 hours. After attack person feels very normal but during migraine attack pain is so severe that one cannot able to do any work. Ayurveda classics compare this pain like scorpion bite or someone hitting head with hammer. This pain can be followed by nausea & vomiting.  Migraine can be with aura or without aura. Aura is preliminary subjective symptoms before headache, like ringing in ears or weakness or visualization of special things in light. Headache is followed by aura in 30% population suffering from migraine. Photophobia, loss of concentration, tinnitus in ears etc. are some associated symptoms of Migraine.

Tension headache-

Tension headache is most common form of headache. Yearly many people suffer from this type of headache. This is continuous or constant type of pain in the scalp or forehead which can last for few minutes to one week. Stress, improper or less sleep in night, heavy work load, travel and emotional stress are some precipitating factors for tension headache. Though reasons are not known but in ayurveda Vata dosha prakopa is primary reason. Due to precipitating factors mentioned above muscle surrounding head becomes stiff & contracts which causes continuous pain in that region. Tension headache is totally harmless type of headache but quality of work & life may get affected due to this.

Cluster headache-

Cluster headache occurs in cluster pattern hence this name is given. This headache come in groups i.e. It occurs daily at same time for some weeks to month then there is symptom free period of 3 to 4 months, after this 3- 4 months same pattern occurs. In this type, headache is unilateral affecting one side of head, cheek, eyebrow & eye, also associated with redness of eye, watering of eye & jaw pain. Nature of pain is pulsating, intermittent & severity of pain is moderate to severe, which can be followed by nausea & vomiting. This type of headache is not associated with aura. Causes of cluster headache are unknown but some scholars believe that it may be due to a sudden release of the chemicals histamine and serotonin in the brain. Smoking, Alcohol, disturbed biological clock, stress are triggering factors for cluster headache.

Management of Shirashul/ Headache-

In moderns medicine some NSAID’s & antidepressants are used, also triptans & ergotamine class drugs are used to treat headache but due to their side effects & cost, these medicines are not advised to take for longer duration.

Ayurveda believes in treating root cause of disease so there is no any pain killer medication used. - Do not eat spicy & heavy to digest foods like pickle, chillie products, sago etc.

-also avoid fermented food like bakery products- bread, Idli-dosa, cake.

- Avoid eating fast food like pizza, burger, vadapav, missal etc.

-Do not suppress natural urges like urination, defecation etc.

-Avoid cold breeze which comes from east side, especially while riding bike.

-Avoid excess alcohol, tobacco & smoking; also avoid late night parties or study.

- Avoid stress either physical or emotional. Avoid habit of sleeping in a day time.

-Follow Yoga practice & do regular Anuloam-viloam pranayama & Tratak to avoid & cure any kind of headache.

Whole grains are called so because they contain parts which have been removed from the refined grains, such as germ and bran. Brown rice, quinoa, oatmeal and buckwheat are a few types of whole grains which are preferred over refined grains such as white rice, flour etc. Whole grains add a whole lot of nutrition to the food you consume.

Here are a few reasons why you should replace refined grains with whole grains:

Whole grains are more nutritious: When compared to refined grains, whole grains preserve a lot of nutrients, such as protein and fibre, which help in digestion and make one feel satiated for a long period of time. The whole grains are also packed with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and healthy fats which add to the nutritional value of the food you consume.
