Hello Everyone!

I am Dr. Abhinav Kumar, Dermatologist. Today I will tell you about the use of finasteride Hair Loss. It is one of the miracle drugs in the field of hair loss. Lots of misconceptions are there. This is a FDA approved drugs which has been approved for male pattern hair loss. Hormones in our body called testosterone and dihydrotestosterone. Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is responsible for the thinning of the hair. There is no DHT or low level of DHT in the blood. So, baldness takes the part at head and also stops the progression of the hair loss.

Myth about these medicines is that it lowers the level of testosterone. This is not true. This enzyme blocks the conversion of testosterone to DHT. This medicine increases the level of testosterone. Myth 2: It has sexual side effects. It is somewhere truth. So, as per research placebo is given to the patient and patient thinks that it is finasteride. So, the side-effect is just 0.3%. Only 3/1000 people have side-effects. Finasteride in pregnancy. So, if you are planning for a child, you should stop taking these medicines before 2 months of planning. Another thing is you should not donate blood. Keep your eye on whether you are getting side-effects or not. Every drug has side-effects. But you need to talk to your doctor first before taking this drug because it could also affect you. It actually varies from person to person whether it will affect or not. This is the only drug which actually works for preventing hair loss.

How long can you take finasteride? You can take it up to 5 years as per FDA. But it still depends because lots of patients still take it even after 5 years. It is a safe drug. Finasteride works on the crown at the most. If someone is getting hair transplant done than he should start taking finasteride as he would be able to retain his hair. So, it is a useful drug in hair transplantation. Otherwise, you have to go for the second transplant. You should not be scared of taking this medicine.

Thank You.
