Hair loss is becoming a major medical issue. While it was common to see people in their 50s and 60s lose hair a couple of decades ago, now it is very prominent in the 20s and 30s. This is not just a cosmetic concern, but also a psychological one. People who experience premature hair loss lose their self-esteem and confidence. Some even need counseling to come to terms with their hair loss. This has also required identifying various methods, which can be used for treating hair loss. One of the most popular one and effective treatment is hair transplant.

With robotic surgery gaining popularity across various fields, hair transplant has also begun the use robots. The most widely used type of method for hair transplant is the ARTAS hair transplant.
What is usually done during hair transplant is the hair follicular units are extracted from the scalp. This is known as follicular unit extraction (FUE), and with the introduction of robots, the extraction of hair is done by the

ARTAS Robotics System.
ARTAS used technology and systems to take hair transplant work more efficiently and effectively. The ARTAS System automates the FUE procedure by using a combination of a computer, software, robotic arm, and imaging technology. The major advantage is, of course, removal of human intervention, which improves precision and reduces incisions.

What is done?

  • Once the patient is identified as a suitable candidate, imaging technology is used to locate areas of the donor's hair.

  • The ARTAS system can remove about 750 to 1000 hair follicles per hour, which is an exponential increase from the manual FUE process.

  • These follicles are then manually re-transplanted in the areas of hair loss.

  • The desired hair design is of course created by the doctor, and the follicles are transplanted as per this design to simulate natural hair growth to the maximum extent possible.

  • By combining technology and the surgeon’s supervision, ARTAS ensures super-optimal results.

  • The main advantage is when manually hair follicles are extracted, it is very time-consuming. Both the doctor and the patient can tire; however, with about 1000 hair follicles being extracted at one go, the operation time is drastically reduced using ARTAS.

Features:

  • Done as an outpatient procedure under local anesthesia, is usually pain-free

  • Side-effects may include pain and swelling of the area where hair follicles were removed

  • The results look very natural, and hair can be combed and styled as desired

  • The trick is, however, to get yourself in safe hands of an experienced doctor, as in the wrong hands, the damage could be significant.

  • Being an elective cosmetic procedure, insurance may not cover this.
