How to Describe Medical Symptoms to your Doctor

Good Afternoon to everyone! I’m Dr. Rachna Kashyap, MD Physician, having 20 years’ experience, working at Rohini, Delhi. I’m running my own medical centre. I’m on panel of Delhi University, Life Insurance Corporation of India, State Bank of India, Central Electricity Regulatory Commission and Press Council of India. I specialize in treating diabetes, hypertension, thyroid illness, female health, and adolescent counselling. Today, I find there is an opportunity to discuss how doctors analyze symptoms to make diagnosis to further treat patients in a better way.

I would like to tell you today, how to present your illness to your doctor. For online consultation, some things are very important. First of all, you have to give your personal details to the doctor, so that the doctor can analyze your illness in a proper way and give you proper counselling and treatment. First of all, try to tell the doctor your age, your sex, your body fitness, your type of body, and your physical exhaustion. Do you take alcohol? If any, inform your doctor, and try to tell the doctor about your smoking habits. You have to inform the doctor about your past illness, any medical history. if you on any medication.

To inform the doctor about your family history is also very important because all the family history problems, medical problems, they can come over again as hereditary problems in your future years. If you are a female patient and you are having any problem, you have to tell about your last menstrual period date which is very important for calculating your days of menstruation.

Secondly, you have to tell about your marital status and your history i.e. do you have any kids, any children, type of birth, type of delivery; you have to mention all these things. By getting all this information, your doctor can help you out in a good way.

Third, about your present illness, try to tell your doctor the time of onset of the illness, for how long it has been there, the severity of the illness. Is it severe, moderate or mild? Further, if there is any pain, you have to mention the severity of the pain. Is it moderate? Is it mild? And then further, it is very important to mention whether it is constant or intermittent. The pain issue is a very big matter and the disease can be analyzed on these issues. By getting all this information, your doctor can help you out in making proper diagnosis within time and can treat you in a better way.
