Piles is a painful condition in which tissues in the anal area swell up. It may develop within or outside the anal area and this disorder is associated with tremendous discomfort while passing stool. In the allopathic form of treatment, the only way of treating piles is through surgery but Ayurveda provides a non-surgical solution which assures long term relief without any harmful side-effect.

Why do piles occur?
The major causes of piles are-

  1. Constipation
  2. Lifting heavy weight regularly
  3. Excessive diarrhoea
  4. Strain while passing stool

What are the symptoms of piles?
These are the certain defining symptoms of piles-

  1. Presence of a painful lump in the anal area
  2. Itchy, sore and painful anal area
  3. Presence of bright fresh blood during bowel movement
  4. Inability to control and hold bowel movements
  5. Feeling of fullness even after passage of stool

How does Ayurveda provide a permanent solution to piles?
Ayurveda is one of the oldest forms of medical treatment that originated in the Vedic era. For piles, Ayurveda recommends the usage of ‘Kshar sutra’. Kshar sutra is a special kind of thread which is prepared by coating a surgical linen thread with extracts from medicinal plants like Euphorbia Nirllifolia and Acyranthus Aspera. Kshar Sutra treatment is a para-surgical treatment used for long-term treatment of ano-rectal diseases in Ayurveda.

The process for treating piles through Kshar Sutra comprises the following-

  1. First, the piles are thoroughly examined to determine its grade.
  2. The second step is application of local anaesthesia in and around the area to make it numb.
  3. Forceps are then used to carefully bring the piles lump out to make a small incision at its base.
  4. The next step would involve introducing the kshar sutra into the piles mass through the incision which was made earlier.
  5. The piles mass would then be placed back in the rectal pack using ghrita.
  6. It is a single sitting surgery.

It is preferred by many over surgery because its recovery period is less and it provides a permanent solution to the problem. Khar Sutra is a relatively pain free treatment for piles as well.
