This medication is a synthetic secretolytic agent which help the natural mechanisms to clear respiratory tract mucus. It increases serous mucus production in respiratory tract and reduces phlegm viscosity, which helps the cilia to clear mucous from the respiratory tract. Altogether they make breathing easier. It causes stimulation via beta-adrenergic receptors of the intracellular adenyl cyclase. The intracellular adenyl cyclase enzyme causes conversion of adenosine triphosphate into adenosine monophosphate and also triggers the TRPM8 receptors in the skin that are cold-sensitive. It does that by blocking calcium currents of the neuronal membrane. Through kappa-opoid receptor agonism, it can also produce analgesic characteristics.
