About Tetrabenazine

Tetrabenazine belongs to a class of medicines called monoamine depletors. It is used for treating involuntary movements (chorea) caused by Huntington disease. It works by reducing the amount of some chemicals in the brain such as norepinephrine, dopamine, serotonin.

This medicine may cause a few side effects like feeling depressed, feeling sleepy or drowsy, unusual muscle movements, feeling dizzy or light-headed, low blood pressure, nausea, stomach upset, difficulty sleeping, feeling anxious or confused, difficulty swallowing, muscle stiffness, fever, sweating and looking pale.

Before you start this medicine, it is important that your doctor knows if you are pregnant or breast-feeding, have liver, kidney or heart problems, depression, Parkinson-like symptoms, a tumour on your adrenal gland, or are using any other medicines. Do not take this medicine if you have ever had an allergic reaction to Tetrabenazine.

    This medication behaves as a human vesicular monoamine transporter that is reversible. It is a type 2 inhibitor and acts in basal ganglia. It heightens depletion of the monoamine neurotransmitter dopamine, serotonin and norepinephrine from the stores.
