Lactobacillus is a commonly available medicine, often available over the counter without a prescription. It is a bacteria that occurs naturally in the human body, and is commonly found in the intestines and in the vagina. It is used as a probiotic.

Commonly used in alternative medicine to treat children with diarrhea caused by rotavirus, it is also used to treat irritable bowel syndrome, colic in infants, lung infections in children, bacterial vaginal infections, skin infection in children who are allergic to milk, among other medical conditions. Although this medicine is available without a prescription, you are advised to consult your doctor before using this medication if you suffer from short bowel syndrome, or have a weakened immune system, as a result of a disease or caused by the usage of certain medications.
