About Doxapram

Doxapram is used to improve respiratory functions of patients who are in intensive or critical care units. It helps to stimulate the respiratory functions of the patients, especially in those who have undergone some majorsurgery or excessive dosage of certain drugs. It is also used for the treatment of patients suffering from chronic lung disorders and breathing difficulties caused by excessive carbon dioxide in the lungs and blood.

Doxapram works as an analeptic agent by activating peripheral carotid chemoreceptors by blocking the potassium channels in the type 1 cells of the carotid body which in turn stimulates the release of catecholamines.
