Calcitriol

Prescription vs OTC : Prescription by Doctor not required

About Calcitriol

Calcitriol is used to treat patients with kidney disease (renal osteodystrophy). It also helps in curing postmenopausal osteoporosis. When taken in combination with other drugs, this medicine also helps in treating plaque psoriasis. It is also helpful in reducing elevated parathyroid hormone levels.

The drug is a type of Vitamin D which helps the body to absorb calcium as well as phosphate. The drug should not be used if:

  • You are allergic to any component in it.
  • You have extremely high levels of calcium and Vitamin D in the body.
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding women.

This drug can be taken either with food or without. You are advised to visit a doctor if any of the side effects last for more than a week.

Following the withdrawal of Calcitriol, treatment consists of bed rest, liberal intake of fluids, reduced calcium intake, and cathartic administration. Severe hypercalcemia requires I.V. hydration and forced diuresis. I.V. saline may increase excretion of calcium.

Calcitriol, cholestyramine, prednisone, sodium EDTA, biphosphonates, and mithramycin have all been used successfully to treat the more resistant cases of vitamin D-induced hypercalcemia.

Take the exact dose as prescribed; do not increase the dose. Maintain the recommended diet and calcium supplementation. Avoid taking magnesium-containing antacids. You may experience nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, or metallic taste (frequent small meals, frequent mouth care, chewing gum, or sucking lozenges may help); or hypotension (use caution when rising from sitting or lying position or when climbing stairs or bending over).
