This is a disorder of the tooth development in which there is abnormal enamel formation. People with amelogenesis imperfecta have sensitive, misshapen and discolored teeth that are very soft and vulnerable to decay.
HOW IS AMELOGENESIS IMPERFECTA DIAGNOSED?
Dentists perform a thorough physical examination of the teeth to confirm diagnosis of AI.
HOW IS AMELOGENESIS IMPERFECTA TREATED?
Preventive and restorative dental care is the line of treatment for AI. Dentists use full-coverage crowns for compensating for the abraded enamel in some cases. For children, stainless steel crowns are first used and these are replaced by porcelain as they become adults. In severe cases of AI, tooth extraction and subsequent use of implants or dentures may be required.
