Epilepsy is defined as a neurological disorder or central nervous system disorder. Here your brain function and activity gets acutely disrupted that results in seizures and acute change in behaviour. It may cause the individual to lose consciousness too. The disease can be fatal if treatment is not provided on time.
HOW IS EPILEPSY DIAGNOSED?
Neurologists may diagnose epilepsy based on the symptoms and signs observed during a seizure. In order to confirm my diagnosis, a testing of the brain may be needed. An epilepsy EEG test is the most commonly prescribed test to confirm epilepsy. Spinal tap and PET scans are other diagnostic methods
HOW IS EPILEPSY TREATED?
The treatment includes mostly medications that helps combating seizures, especially anti-seizure medicines are prescribed. Surgery may be done if the seizure is restricted to very small part of the brain. But along with this, therapies like Ketogenic diet and vagus nerve stimulation may also be suggested. Research is on for deep brain stimulation treatment too.
