It is a condition where the bronchial tubes of the lungs are permanently damaged and enlarged. It is caused due to inhalation of foreign body or food, breathing in stomach, cystic fibrosis, GERD, weakness in immune system. The symptoms take months to years to develop and include:
1. chronic coughing
2. coughing up blood
3. abnormal sounds or wheezing in the chest on breathing
4. shortness of breath
5. chest pain
6. coughing up large amounts of mucus daily
7. bad breath
8. skin with a blue appearance
11. thickening of the skin under nails and toes
HOW IS BRONCHIECTASIS DIAGNOSED?
The general physician will do a blood test to look for any infection, sputum culture to identify the responsible bacteria and lung function test to assess both lungs.
HOW IS BRONCHIECTASIS TREATED?
While this condition has no cure, a pulmonology specialist can prescribe antibiotics that will eliminate the onset of infections, as well as other medication that can make the mucus thin. Oxygen therapy is also recommended for such patients.
