You should enroll him in organizations like Alcohol Anonymous. Where there are groups of people with similar problems. They discuss, express there problems and also share stories how they got out of it. This acts as effective tools for behavior modification and de-addiction.

I'm an alcoholic and have undergone several detox treatments as well as rehabs in india. I also attend alcoholics anonymous meetings which is very inconvenient since it clashes with my workhours. I was told about naltrexone tablets that help reduce and eventually, eliminate the desire for alcohol. I'm not a daily drinker. Instead, I go on frequent binges, usually after 3-6 months of sobriety. Thankfully, I have no other medical conditions. Would taking naltrexone help me?

Dear, definitely naltrexone will help in reducing the cravings for alcohol. Along with naltrexone, you need to undergo motivational enhancement therapy and other psycho social methods. You need to take naltrexone for 9-12 months at least. It is a costly tablet. Think whether you can afford for many months before starting it. Just for few days sobriety, you don't need such a costly tablet. Since you have binges of drinking, please consult a psychiatrist to diagnose and treat any recurring mental illness.

Hi there are systematic methods to reduce and even stop drinking alcohol even if it has gone to the stage of addiction. This may involve a systematic deaddiction process, group therapy, aversion therapy and individual counselling. But the biggest blockage is the all these methods can be used only if your father is motivated.

How can I stop drinking alcohol and anything that can be replaced instead of alcohol.
Alcohol dependence involves intense craving or desire to drink alcohol. People drink for pleasure or rationalize it on external factors like family problems, work tension, etc. They drink continuously, i.e. Almost daily or even weekly once or twice with withdrawal symptoms, tolerance, bodily damage, etc. You need to consult a psychiatrist and go for 3 steps of de addiction. 1st is detoxification, when alcohol is stopped and the withdrawal is made smooth with minimal discomfort, 2 nd is maintenance and further deaddiction when the physical problems and psychological state of the individual is maintained and anti-craving drugs started 3 rd rehabilitation, when relapse prevention is the goal, while maintaining deaddiction. All the best.
