Exotropia is a condition of the eye where one or even both of the eyes tend to turn outwards. It is a common kind of strabismus or deviation of the eye. The most common symptom of the illness is the eye turning outwards and usually this is accompanied with reduced vision, trouble seeing and also sensitivity to the eye.
HOW IS EXOTROPIA DIAGNOSED?
Eyes don't look in the same direction at the same time as well as both the eyes do not move together. Children may rub one of their eyes or may squint one eye in bright sunlight. Some people complain of blurred or double vision when their eyes are misaligned. People with exotropia may experience the outward drift only occasionally, despite their efforts to refocus.
HOW IS EXOTROPIA TREATED?
Non-surgical treatment may include glasses and in certain cases a patching therapy may be recommended. If the eyes are misaligned more often than they are straight, surgery on the eye muscles may be recommended in order to realign the eyes.
DID YOU KNOW?
Exotropia can cause permanent vision problems, if it is not treated. If a child is not using one eye because it is misaligned, he or she can develop poor vision in that eye. It affects the child’s appearance as well as the self-esteem due to the teasing by other kids
