Babesiosis primarily infects animals, but in rare cases it may occur in humans. It is a tick-borne disease caused by microscopic parasites belonging to Babesia family. It may also be acquired by blood transfusion, particularly in endemic areas. As Babesia parasites infect red blood cells, it can cause haemolytic anaemia. Some people develop following malaria-like symptoms: 1) Fever 2) Chills 3) Sweats 4) Headache 5) Nausea, or fatigue 6) Loss of appetite 7) Muscle pain However, many infected individuals don’t show any symptoms.
HOW IS BABESIOSIS DIAGNOSED?
Diagnosis of Babesiosis can be done in specialized laboratories. General physicians may order for serologic testing for antibodies against babesia, polymerase chain reaction test. Other tests include blood tests, complete blood count and platelet tests.
HOW IS BABESIOSIS TREATED?
Patients who are asymptomatic and healthy do not require any treatment. Others with mild Babesiosis may be treated with specific chemotherapy. For elderly patients, intravenous administration of oral quinine is given. For respiratory distress, mechanical ventilation may be needed.
