1.Taking a break from repetitive activities for four to six weeks. 2.Wearing a brace or splint to restrict motion and rest the hand. 3.Applying heat or ice to reduce swelling. 4.Placing your hand in warm water several times throughout the day to relax the tendons and muscles. Exercises..Lay your hand out flat on a table or solid surface. Use your other hand to hold the affected finger. Slowly lift up the finger and keep the rest of your fingers flat. Hii this kind of pain and numbness could be due to carpal tunnel syndrome in which a nerve called median nerve is compressed under a sheath in the wrist. This usually occurs more at night and certain position of wrist. You should get done certain tests to know the cause. Like Nerve conduction studies. Sugar levels, thyroid profile, rheumatoid factor. Yes there are treatments. Medications for milder cases, wrist splint and physiotherapy. Cold compresses etc. For moderate cases steroid injections in the wrist. Severe cases may need surgery.

Hi I have de quervian's tenosynovitis on my right hand. It's fine the whole day but it hurts in the night if I don't put on the wrist splint. Is this how it will have to be for the whole life? I have gone to a foctor who gave me some pain killers for a week and suggested complete rest of the hand for a week or so. That is not an option for me. Is there a way out of this other than a surgery?

Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am Dr. Akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. De quervain's tenosynovitis is inflammation of sheath of 1st extensor tendons due to which there is pain at the level of styloid process. The treatment depends upon the symptoms you are having, normally ice packs for local application, thumb spica splint for 3-4 weeks not only at night but all throughout, anti-inflammatory medication as per your suitability, local analgesic spray for application but no massage, ultrasonics and laser as physical therapy modalities are useful in many cases. But if it does not get better, then release is better, it is actually a daycare procedure which take about 8-10 minutes to do in ot under local anesthesia, so it is very safe procedure. Do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance.

For the past 6 years I am suffering from tired legs through out day and night above ankle and below knee. I have tried physiotherapy, if treatment, massaging, calcium/D3 tablets, nerve soothing medicines such as oxetol, gabapentin. No improvement. I walk daily for 40 minutes in the morning. I do not know my symptoms refer to CFS, RLS, shin splint. I am 76 years old otherwise healthy. Can you give us a clue for cause and treatment.
