Hello sir. Acne is a common problem which occurs due to the hormonal change which your body experiences during puberty. It can be exaggerated due to various reasons and cause scars. The treatment for the acute acne and its scars differs. The acute acne requires the treatment for decreasing the inflammation/infection, improve the skin healing and protection from the sun during the whole process. That is what you are using now. Whereas the scar treatment is entirely different. The ointment you said is nowhere related to the treatment of the scars. So its better if you can consult a skin specialist for proper examination and appropriate treatment. U can consult me online for any further details.

Acne in Adult Women and Their Treatment!

Pimples are typically associated with one’s teenage years. However, many women find themselves dealing with acne breakouts right up to menopause. Adult acne is becoming an increasingly common condition that affects women between the ages of 25 and 50. Like the pimples that affect young girls, adult acne can also be triggered by many different factors. This condition can be treated but in order to do so, it is essential to understand the factors triggering it.

Hormonal Fluctuation
As a woman’s menstrual cycle progresses, the levels of estrogen, progestin, and androgens in her body fluctuate. A painful cyst around the chin, neck or back can be the result of this fluctuation. These breakouts tend to resolve themselves as the menstrual cycles wanes. If you suffer from severe adult acne, you may need to ask your dermatologist for medication such as oral contraceptives that can manipulate hormone fluctuation.

Stress
Stress not only affects your mental health but also affects your skin. Stress causes the adrenal gland responsible for the production of cortisol to increase production. One of the side effects of this increased production is an increased amount of testosterone in the body. This causes the oil glands to secrete more oil. The higher the oil content of your skin, the higher your risk of having an acne breakout. Meditation and exercise can help curb stress and keep your skin clearer.

Wrong Cleaning Technique
Washing your face too often can dry the skin and trigger an overproduction of oil thus leading to acne. Similarly, using the wrong products like an oil-based moisturizer for normal skin can clog your pores. Using a very coarse cleanser can also promote adult acne. Hence, limit yourself to washing your face twice a day with a mild face wash. Choose water-based makeup and creams. Look for products that contain salicylic acid and glycolic acid.

In addition, here are a few ways to relieve the symptoms of adult acne.

  1. Topical application of retinol can reduce the intensity of acne. However, this may be harsh on sensitive skin.
  2. For spot treatment, look for products with benzoyl peroxide.
  3. Natural substances like tea tree oil can help control moderate acne breakouts. This can be used as a soap to wash your face or as a topical applicant.
  4. Reducing your consumption of salt, milk and processed food can also help reduce acne.

Last but not the least; do not ever try to pick a pimple. Painful zits may need to be drained but this should not be attempted at home.

Acne - Does Diet Play A Role?

Acne - Does Diet Play A Role?

Acne is a common skin disease which happens when the hair follicles becomes full with dead skin cells and oil secreted from the skin. Acne is mainly characterized by vast areas of blackheads and pimples. The appearance of a person suffering from acne has often led to anxiety, and in extreme cases has caused depression as well.

CAUSES OF ACNE-

  1. Genetics is thought to be one of the main reasons for hair fall due to acne. This is supported both by Twin studies and studies that have shown higher rates of acne among first degree relatives. Acne susceptibility is polygenic as the disease does not follow the Mendelian inheritance pattern.
  2. Another reason for acne is related to hormonal activities such as those during menstrual cycle and puberty. During puberty, sex hormones called androgens increase which causes the follicular glands to grow larger than normal. Many hormones like testosterone, dihydrotestosterone, dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate and growth hormone have been shown to have links with acne.
  3. Many bacteria like the anaerobic bacterium are suspected to be a reason behind acne. Infection caused by the parasite Demodex is also responsible for causing acne.

Role of Diet in Acne-

Different studies have been done to establish a relationship between diet and acne but there is no evidence to prove so. Some tests have shown different degrees of acne intensity due to high glycemic diets. Another unproved study shows consuming dairy milk is linked to higher incidences and intensity of acne. One recent experiment has shown a relationship between acne and obesity however no relationship is found between acne and insulin metabolism. Vitamin B12 may cause skin problems similar to acne.

Cigarette smoking and acne has been a ground for high debate among biologists. Some medical records have shown that cigarette smoking increases the severity of acne.

Some studies have also shown that stress or other psychological causes worsens acne. Acne severity is linked to high stress levels.

SYMPTOMS-

  1. Scars are a common symptom of acne. Acne scars are caused due to inflammation in the skin dermal layer. The scar is made by an abnormal form of healing after the inflammation. These scars are classified on the basis of whether excess collagen or collagen loss is caused by the abnormal inflammation.
  2. Nodular acne lesions cause pigmentations. This often leaves a red, inflamed mark even after the lesion has been cured.

TREATMENT-

  1. A diet low on glycemic index is recommended for treating acne.
  2. Benzoyl peroxide is the first step in treating mild to moderate acne. This is because of its high effectiveness and mild side effects. The peroxide causes drying of the skin as a side effect.
  3. Antibiotics are very much used for treating acne. Oral antibiotics are highly recommended. This is because of their anti-inflammatory properties.
  4. Azelaic acid when applied at 20% concentration is effective for treating mild to moderate acne.
  5. Natural treatment methods include applying tea tree oil or bee venom to reduce the amount of lesions in acne.

Acute Acne - Tips To Help You Manage It With Ease!

One of the skin’s main functions is protection, and one of the ways it does that is by producing sebum. During teenage and early adolescent years, there is a release of excessive sexual hormones, which also leads to excessive sebum production. This clogs the pores, leading to accumulation of sebum within the skin layers. There are also bacteria trapped within this, leading to infections. Symptoms could include blister formation with pustules, redness, and severe pain. In people with naturally oily skin, this can be a major problem, with large acne which may leave marks when healed.

Causes:
Excessive hormones (androgens).
In girls, correlation with menstrual cycles, pregnancy, and polycystic ovaries,  indicating an association with increased hormone levels.

Management: As it is easy to identify if you are prone to developing acne, steps should be taken to avoid developing acne or reducing its severity once they appear.

  1. Touching acne is a strict no-no. There is a great tendency to keep picking at it, but this should be avoided as the infection can spread to other unaffected areas.
  2. Using a cold towel or soft cotton cloth can help in soothing the area
  3. Ice cubes can also be used on the acne. This will also reduce blood supply and curtail increase in severity
  4. Acne is proven to be an indication of stress, and so stress management is very essential.
  5. Keep calm by various methods – meditation, music, yoga, exercise
  6. A regular exercise routine also is very helpful. The sweating during the exercise helps in clearing up the pores and keeping the skin clean. Sebum is more often cleared out this way, leading to reduced acne
  7. Lifestyle (sleep and diet): A healthy eating pattern with reduced oily foods and sugars and more amounts of fresh foods is highly helpful. A good amount of sleep is also beneficial for overall skin health.
  8. Garments which come in touch with facial skin like pillow covers should be washed with gentle soap
  9. Regular skin care routine should be maintained including frequent washing, regular moisturising, and periodic exfoliating.
  10. Avoid too many chemicals and adhere to a regimen using as many natural substances as possible.
  11. Mild gels or lotions like tretinoin, tazarotene, and adapalene are useful in controlling acne
  12. Topical antibiotics like clindamycin or erythromycin combined with benzoyl peroxide may also be used if more severe
  13. Birth control pills are also used to regulate hormonal levels in some women.
  14. Scars can be treated with laser light therapy, dermabrasion, chemical peels, or steroid injections
  15. Remember that acne is a part of growing up, and will naturally reduce after the growing years.
