Astigmatism is an eye defect caused by the imperfect curvature of the cornea or the eye lens. Astigmatism due to irregularly shaped cornea is called corneal astigmatism, while irregular shape of the lens is called lenticular astigmatism. Also, the use of standardized reading chart from a distance of at least 20 feet can give a correct portrayal of the condition.

The treatment of this condition is conducted by an ophthalmologist who will prescribe corrective surgery. Also, procedures that can be used to install eyeglass lens so as to counteract the defective shape can be used.
