When the protective layer of the eye, called the Cornea, gets damaged due to sand, poking, dirt, lens that do not fit properly or eye infections, this is called Corneal Abrasion. This condition usually leads to a tear in the eyes as well as acute pain. Also, the patient may experience blurry vision and sensitivity to harsh glares of light.
HOW IS CORNEAL ABRASION DIAGNOSED?
To diagnose a corneal abrasion, the optometrist or ophthalmologist may apply an eye drop to numb the eye to keep it open for the exam. Another type of eye drop may be used to help the doctor see the extent of the abrasion when viewing the eye with a blue light and an examining microscope called a slit lamp. Depending on what may have caused the scratch and what the doctor sees during the exam, the eye might be gently swabbed for a culture to ensure proper treatment in the event of infection.
HOW IS CORNEAL ABRASION TREATED?
Treatment for corneal abrasion depends on the severity of the scratch. The doctor may prescribe antibiotic eye drops for preventing infection due to abrasion. Medicated drops may be given for bringing down the inflammation. Temporary patching of the affected eye may ease out the pain and discomfort. In the case of eye pain, pain relief medicine may be given. Mild abrasions heal quickly, while major abrasions may take some time.
