Blood pressure rises when we grow with age. Before adulthood, blood pressure rises in parallel with height. In adult years, weight and blood pressure are closely related. When weight goes up, blood pressure tends to go up and we can lower blood pressure by losing weight to avoid any severe complications.
The pressure exerted by the circulation of blood on the walls of the blood vessels is known as blood pressure. It is expressed in the form of a ration between the systolic (maximum) pressure and the diastolic (minimum) pressure. It forms one of the vital signs of the human body along with respiration rate, oxygen saturation, body temperature and heart rate. In normal adults, the normal BP range is somewhere between 90/60 Hg – 120/80 Hg. The proper BP for an adult would be around 120/80 Hg.
Factors like stress, work environment, activity, emotional upheavals, food sensitivity etc. cause minor fluctuations in blood pressure. The nervous and endocrine systems also control the blood pressure.
Low BP is a condition when the BP of an adult is below 90/60 Hg. In healthy adults, low BP is not very dangerous. It is however quite common for BP to fall below normal when there is a sudden change of posture from a sitting or lying position to one standing up. If the person experiences dizziness, faints and/or experiences shock however, it develops into a case of medical emergency. In such cases, low BP may be an indication of low blood supply to the brain, severe loss of blood, bulimia or anorexia, sepsis, haemorrhage, wrongful consumption of blood pressure medication or hormonal abnormalities like Addison’s disease.
When the BP of an adult individual is over 120/80 Hg, the condition is known as high BP. It has the following stages:
• Pre hypertension: The BP is between 120/80 Hg – 139/89 Hg.
• Stage 1 or Primary Hypertension: Primarily hereditary in nature, the BP ranges from 140/90 Hg-159/99 Hg.
• Stage 2 or Advanced Hypertension: The BP reading is over 160/100 Hg.
Pulmonary hypertension develops due to the increase in blood-pressure in the pulmonary arteries, veins or capillaries. It may be genetically transmitted, or may develop as a result of tobacco exposure or abuse of drugs like cocaine and methamphetamine.
High BP is generally a condition without symptoms. Sudden increase in blood-pressure may however result in severe anxiety, nosebleed, headache and shortness of breath. Hypertensive crisis caused due to the abrupt spike of BP is responsible for heart attacks, heart failure, arterial aneurysm, kidney failure, strokes, and accumulation of fluid in the lungs and bleeding in the brain. Pregnant women develop condition called eclampsia which threatens the lives of mother as well as the unborn child/children.
How to cure high BP is an important question. While high BP needs constant monitoring and medical consultation, the patient is also required to check weight gain and observe a strict diet of low sodium, low caffeine and alcohol content. It is advisable to quit smoking. In addition, the patent must ecxercise regularly for a minimum of 30 minutes.
