It is a rare and aggressive form of non- Hodgkin lymphoma. Non-Hodgkin lymphoma is a type of cancer of the lymphatic system, which helps your body fight infections. It can cause fever, weight loss and night sweats. Other symptoms vary according to type. Sporadic Burkitt Lymphoma has the following symptoms:
1. abdominal swelling
2. distortion of facial bones
3. night sweats
4. intestinal obstruction
5. an enlarged thyroid
6. enlarged tonsils
Endemic Burkitt's lymphoma has the following symptoms:
1. swelling and distortion of facial bones
2. rapid growth of lymph nodes
HOW IS BURKITT LYMPHOMA DIAGNOSED?
The various tests involved for diagnosing the cancer are:
• Bone marrow biopsy
• Chest x-ray
• CT scan of the chest, abdomen, and pelvis
• Complete blood count (CBC)
• Examination of the spinal fluid
• Lymph node biopsy
• PET scan
HOW IS BURKITT LYMPHOMA TREATED?
Chemotherapy is used to treat this type of cancer. If the cancer does not respond to chemotherapy alone, a bone marrow transplant may be done. Surgery or radiation therapy has no role in the treatment of Burkitt lymphoma. Antibiotics and other medications may be prescribed for fever and infections.
