lybrate-user, Water melon can be consumed by a person with diabetes. But daily intake should not exceed about 100 g, that too with strict blood glucose control. Sugar free tablets can be used as a substitute for sugar. However, none of the sugar substitutes are very safe. Regular use of these compounds tends to increase craving for sweets. Long term usage is also no considered safe enough. Thanks.

Hello, Thanks for the query. Usually if a liquid is labled as "syrup" it does contain sugar. So when one prescribes it to a diabetes patient you have to look at the quantity(mentioned on the lable. Or ask for a sugar free version of the same product which mostly companies have. Thanks.

Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. A person with diabetes should take a restricted diet, that provides exact calories based on his/her ideal body weight, extent of daily exercise and control on blood glucose levels. Following are general guidelines: Avoid sweets completely, no sugar or jaggery, avoid deep fried foods, pastries, junk foods, bakery items, foods made form maida and colas. Consume more of green leafy vegetables, salads and permitted fruits. Use unpolished rice, use whole grain flour for roti and chapati. Specific diet plan to a person can only be given if all the details are made available like: fasting, Pp glucose levels, HbA1c%, drugs being taken with dosage, lipid profile, extent of daily exercise, weight and height, present dietary habits. Thanks.

Mr. Lybrate-user, it is best to avoid sugar totally for a diabetes patient. Taking sugar substitutes also in not good. Recent studies have shown that all the sugar substitutes are unsafe. They increase craving for sugar, plus also have side effects of their own. So it is always good to avoid them totally.
