Ribavirin is a medication that acts against viruses. It treats hepatitis C, respiratory syncytial virus infections and viral hemorrhagic fever. It is also prescribed in other viral infections including influenza A and B and adenovirus.

This medicine is specially indicated for the treatment of severe lower respiratory tract RSV infections in patients with an underlying compromising condition (prematurity, bronchopulmonary dysplasia and other chronic lung conditions, congenital heart disease, immunodeficiency, immunosuppression), and recent transplant recipients.

Ribavirin is the primary drug when it comes to the treatment of Congo fever. This is a viral haemorrhagic fever which is usually transmitted by ticks. Tell your doctor if you have or ever had a mental illness, cancer, diabetes, sexually transmitted disease, sarcoidosis, gout, Gilbert's syndrome, thyroid, eye, pancreas, or lung disease.

You must not take this medication if have or taking:

  • Didanosine
  • Liver failure
  • Kidney disease
  • Autoimmune hepatitis.

This medication is available as a tablet, a capsule and an oral solution to take by mouth or inhale. It is usually taken with food two times a day, in the morning and the evening, for 24 to 48 weeks or longer.

Use with caution in patients requiring assisted ventilation because precipitation of the drug in the respiratory equipment may interfere with safe and effective patient ventilation; monitor carefully in patients with COPD and asthma for deterioration of respiratory function. Rebetol 200Mg Capsule is potentially mutagenic, tumour-promoting, and gonadotoxic.
