Sciatica is a type of pain that radiates along the path of the sciatica nerve. The sciatica nerve branches from the lower back through hips and buttocks down to each leg. Mostly Sciatica affects only one side of the body. Symptoms of Sciatica are:
• Pain that radiates from lower spine to buttocks
• Discomfort along the nerve pathway
• Mild to sharp, shooting pain
• Pain like an electric shock
• Numbness or tingling
• Muscle weakness
HOW IS SCIATICA DIAGNOSED?
Your general physician may look for muscle strength and reflexes in a physical examination. Imaging tests such as x-rays, CT scan, MRI and electromyography (EMG) will be needed for definitive diagnosis.
HOW IS SCIATICA TREATED?
Besides medication, Sciatica is treated by way of physical therapy and often, surgery is needed to treat Sciatica.
