Trichotillomania is a psychiatric disorder which results in pulling one’s hair in a compulsive manner from any part site on the body of an individual that ultimately leads to bald patches. Hair pulling usually takes place from the scalp, eyebrows, eyelashes but it can also occur in other sites like the arms, legs, underarms and pubic regions.

There are a number of ways through which Ayurveda can help to get rid of this problem of impulsive hair pulling or in other words, Trichotillomania. Let us look at the method of treatment in Ayurveda to cure this problem:

Pitta Dosha: Whenever a person is affected by stress, he or she tends to fight and they feel angry about the hair loss, then the ideal thing is to employ certain procedures to pacify the Pitta. 1. Meditating in a peaceful environment
  2. Visualize as if the heat is moving downward right into one’s shins
  3. One can even rub coconut or bhringaraj oil on their scalp and hair.

Vata Dosha: The tendency of Vata dosha is that when it gets faced with stress, it goes away. If one is feeling really fearful about their hair loss and is worried that it might indicate something more serious a disease, then they must pacify the Vata. Some of the guidelines include:

  1. Meditation in the forest
  2. Massage with sesame or bhringaraj oil on the scalp and hair.
  3. While washing it off, apply shampoo on it before getting the hair wet or else the oil will not come out.

Kapha Dosha: The tendency of Kapha when it gets faced with stress, is that it gets frozen. Here are some of the ways to get it fixed and hence cure Trichotillomania:

  1. Meditation in a peaceful environment
  2. Visualize as if the web of the heart is expanding out in all directions and helping you to link up with the rest of the world.

  4. Then, while washing it off, apply shampoo on the oily hair before getting it wet or else the oil will not come out.
